After reading that R4s were horrible in snow, I wasn’t sure what to expect on snow with my new L2501 HST with R4s and loaded tires with bucket only. I was a bit apprehensive and played for a bit up near my upper shed before making the plunge down my driveway. I was hoping I wouldn’t need my Ranger to pull me back up the hill. :D

We had about 8-10 inches with drifts up to about 1 1/2 feet. Almost all of the snow plowing/moving was on gravel.

Most of the work was done with my Polaris Ranger Midsize 570 on the long driveway. But it was nice to move the snow with the tractor instead of just pushing to the side of the road with the plow blade in straight position. Even in Low the Ranger is much faster as expected.

I’ve never operated a tractor, so maybe these observations are obvious to some of you. My experience was limited to the test drive, and a little bit of time on the delivery day.

Observations:

L2501 HST with R4s did push the front at times, but so did the Ranger today. I had to run in true 4 wheel drive with the Ranger which I almost never do plowing with the Ranger. I did order chains for the front for just this situation, but I don’t think they would be absolutely required. Diff lock didn’t help me move forward, but it didn’t make the front steer.

Loved the HST for going backwards and forwards to dump snow.

It was around 20, and I was just fine in the rops without cab and minimal wind.

Lifting/moving the snow off the road/parking areas was definitely helpful

I did use diff lock a couple of times to push snow. Lifting the bucket to reduce the force was helpful in those cases as well as dumping the snow.

I did need to back off the treadle peddle to go “faster” uphill. I’ll do better next time. I was a bit surprised how slow it went if I pushed the peddle too far. Counterintuitive, but not a problem.

The Ranger can’t do everything the L2501 can do and vice versa. I think I’ll probably use both on the next snow, and we are expecting more over the coming days.

Get a front or back blade and you'll do a heck of a lot more than the loader will do.
I don't use the loader for anything except piling up snow when it get to be a bit much or to help push me out of a stuck situation.

I don't use the loader for anything except piling up snow when it get to be a bit much or to help push me out of a stuck situation.

You also might consider chains if you have to deal with ice much. One part of my driveway is too slippery for me to plow with bare R4 tires without chains, if it is icy, or if slippery due to snow starting to melt.

You also might consider chains if you have to deal with ice much. One part of my driveway is too slippery for me to plow with bare R4 tires without chains, if it is icy, or if slippery due to snow starting to melt.
I put 2" spacers front and rears and chained up. It helps after I've plowed a few times. Once the snow has a glaze on it'll get a bit more complicated. Chains help me get more push/pull.

I’ve ordered chains for the front already. They are just basic ladder style chains.

I have the Kubota spacers on the rear. I think I read that they are 1 3/8 although I haven’t measured them. I wasn’t sure what type of chains I could fit with those spacers on the rear.

I’m also looking into a rear blade. I’m currently thinking an 84. I have a 72 on my midsize ranger and angled it could stand being a bit wider. I don’t know what brand is recommended although I’m looking at Land Pride, but it might be a challenge to find one of any brand.

Another quick note, I think I might have had the parking brake on when I was going uphill yesterday since it was much better today, and I have been using the parking brake when I get off.

An 84" blade, F or R, will be too large for your tractor in many conditions.

With my B2910, which is a smaller tractor with less weight, I don't think I could get by with less than a 72" blade, which when angled, barely extends beyond the rear tires.

I would think the 84" blade would be a good fit for the L2501.

A 72" blade with an offset capability might work well too. I wish I had one...

My bet is the 84" on a L2501 would work best in most conditions. But that is just a guess on my part. But it is what I would go with if I had a L2501.
