Good morning all, I have a 1990 M8580 that is smoking real bad and was talking with a mechanic and he said these engines have no sleeves and are very expensive to rebuild. I am hoping some of you can give me some insight on whether to rebuild or change engine or something else.

Thank you

Big, important questions here from my recent learnings...

What colour is the smoke, and when does it smoke?

If black smoke under load, look at the air intake path for obstructions (dirty filter, mouse nest etc) and, if that's clean, the next place to look is injectors. Black smoke = too much fuel. Again, from good info shared here by those with more expertise than I have, the possibility is very good that your injectors are worn and need overhaul or replacement.

Yup.. WHAT COLOR is the smoke.. Is the engine "missing/skipping"??
You can narrow down "A" cylinder by getting the engine to smoke & loosening up the lines AT THE INJECTORS 1@ a TIME & retighten.. while looking at the smoke..
Loosened injector line= no smoke.. tightened inj. line=smoke.. that's your problem cylinder. Just like pulling a wire on a spark plug to find a problem plug or cylinder..
IF you can narrow it down to a single cylinder.. you can swap the injector to the furthest cyl. AWAY FROM the prob. cylinder & recheck it..
THAT will give u an idea if its the injector OR the cylinder..
Good Luck & heres hoping for the best..

All distills down to the smoke color and is it using oil and is this all the time (idle) or when you throttle up the motor?

If it's when you throtle up the motor and it's black smoke, the device that controls the fueling rate when you throttle up is malfunctioning. Kubota uses a device to limit the fuel rate when throttling up to curb black smoke. It's on the turbo housing.

We need to know when, what and how much and if the oil level is dropping as well.

#1 Find a much more competent mechanic to look at it!

Before you spend the money to rebuild it, have a mechanic that actually knows these engines look at it, or simply enough take a video of it and post it on youtube and give us a link to see it.

I've worked on quite a few engines that others thought needed a total rebuild, only to have it need injectors or a crankcase breather cleaned out.
One such engine the previous owner didn't like the drip or smoke coming from a crankcase vent and plugged it, thing smoked like a train.

So was wondering if the wizz bang mechanic either :

A. Offered to rebuild that "expensive to rebuild" sleeveless engine for you...

or...

B. Offered to buy that too "expensive to rebuild" tractor from you.

........Obviously that "mechanic" is dumber than a dipstick or else he thinks you are !

Oh Oh Oh !

I think I got it now !!!

I know why Kubota uses sleeveless engine blocks !!!!!

Your tractor runs cooler in the summer if the engine is sleeveless !!!

.... I know that because I am cooler in the summer when I wear sleeveless !!!

And if an engine runs cooler then there will be less wear on its sleeves !!!
