We have, well, dont actualy know the model #,but its a baby Kubota
backhoe, new an needs its first oil change.

Im kind of an old school gear head,an I know that people would just use
a heavy duty diesel motor oil.
I know on todays engines, its not good to run a heavy viscosity oil.
My ? is,what is the proper crankcase oil should I be using in our knew
tractor,it has the 3 cylinder engine in it.

Thnx a ton!...

Bx23 of mine says 10w30 or use SAE 30 for year around.
Ok thnx,The reason why I was asking,is because that I heard that
its not good to run a heavy oil on todays newer engines because
the enternal parts like crank bearings have more tighter surfaces,
an some engines have oil injection systems, which the thicker oil
can not lube the tighter surfaces.

Thnx again...

I just did my first oil change in my machine... and my first time changing a diesel.

If you aren't 100% confident, I'd advise looking at your machine to find the model number and talking to an authorized dealer to let them tell you what is specified. There's going to be others who will suggest doing it even better by using Brand X oil, but knowing the model number will at least start you down your path of research and discovery.

Without knowing what model and how new it's hard to really say what to use. Don't know if it's tier 3 or tier 4 engine, maybe some pictures would help.

I myself use 5w30 oil, most Kubotas work fine with 10w30 or 15w40 although oil that heavy isn't required in most cases.

I guess the main thing to remember is you need diesel grade oil. Don't just throw anything in there and hope for the best. Like Zippyslug31 said, if you're not sure it might be a good idea to go to the dealer for advise. To me it's not worth the risk just to guess at it and assume you got it right. Using the correct fluid is a big deal.

this is the key topic....

what bulldog said -
"the main thing to remember is you need diesel grade oil"

In your area I would use 10-30 Shell Rotella® T6 Full Synthetic .......hell - you can get it in walmart too!!!:)

In a simple note - I would never use straight 30 weight........the 10w30 pours better when cold, protects as well when hot. If that part of Calif gets reallllll cold, then maybe go with 5w-30 .......

once the oil(s) get real hot the flow-ability (viscosity) is all the same.......but cranking cold is where the wear is created.

Wow,thnx Guy's!...:D

The tractor is less than 2 yrs old an only has about a 130 hrs on it.
We do have the manuals an paper work for it.
I rarely use it,but the other workers use it.I used it the other day,
an it dawned on me that it may not had its first oil changed yet after
so many hrs.
I had asked my suprvisor,an he said no,an Im like, well it should have had an oil change,he said, well just go get some heavy duty oil an do the change.
An Im like thinking to myself, yea right....An your supose to be a know it
all supervisor....:p

Im a gardner an Ive built my own lawn equipment,an still use my 20
yr old john deere.
Thats why Im here getting advise..Ive also been reading up on the proper
grease to use, alot a good info on this site...Thnx Guy's....

I have 2 30 year old Kubotas. My manual said 10/30 or straight 30, no synthetics. Been running 10/30 Mystic from Farm and Fleet. Change every fall.

Oil for diesel engines will be rated CJ-4 these days. I run Delo and change it often. If you want to be a synner (i know, bad pun) Rotella T-6 seems to be the oil of choice. Some newer engines do call for lighter weight oil, our daily driver calls for full syn 0-20.

mmmmm.......a thirty year old tractor says no synthetics.
like to see that in a wsm.

so what is being said that because it is old, we should use old technology in it.

Synthetic is not slicker, there is no magic in it.....it simply does not break down like typical oil. If you get 10w and 10w30 they both pour at the same rate when COLD. Some say that synthetics slip by old seals......I have run syns in everything I own that doesnt burn oil. I have no proof that it does or does not.

From a protection stand point, the best oil found on the market, is the newest formulation.

now, there is some problems with certain types of bearings and bad reactions to certain type of lubes:)
