Went to Colorado last week elk hunting we were going to hunt the San Juan mountains but the night before opening day 40 + cows and a bull came into my buddies horse pasture. So we hung around the ranch opening day and 25 cows and a bull showed up at daybreak. One of my buddies wanted the bull since he has never shot a bull and my buddy Dale and I have shot several. A few minutes after shooting light on the count of 3 we all shot and dropped 2 cows in their tracks. My buddy shooting at the bull had a touch of Bull fever and missed. Being as safe as possible I used the blaze orange pack horse to pack the elk to the barn for skinning.

You will have a freezer or two full of meat, but the fun just starts when they hit the ground. I know I got 312 pounds of cut, wrapped meat off mine. That plus a 300 lb hog, I ended up sharing almost half of it with my family, friends and neighbors

Thats a fact! Once you shootem then the work starts,, I was always told figure 1/3 body weight in head hide and viscera, and just about 1/3 more in the bones, to figure usable meat. Last white tail I did it took all day to cut wrap grind and haul it to the freezer. Its harder when no one wants to help any more, so i stopped doing them my self. My nephew shot one last week, it cost his dad 90 bucks to get cut up plus any extra like jerky or meat sticks. Figureing it thats pretty expensive meat,,lol

Yeppers thats some mighty fine eating ;)

Jeremiah Johnson: [Jeremiah and Bear Claw hunt elk] Wind's right, but he'll just run soon as we step out of these trees.
Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Trick to it. Walk out on this side of your horse.
Jeremiah Johnson: What if he sees our feet?
Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Elk don't know how many feet a horse has!

I packed this bull out of a deep canyon in 2004 with the help of a friend and it took 16 hours, I'm loving my Kubota elk lol.
