anybody know how to distinguish the model year of these tractors? I think I'm going to need to replace my starter.

You don't need the year, you need the serial number. If there is a change to the starter it will be at a certain serial number not a certain year. Often the new one supersedes the old one.

If you're sure you need a starter you should be able to take it to a local starter repair shop. They can probably either repair yours or come up with an equivalent replacement for far less than the genuine Kubota article which is unlikely to be made by Kubota anyhow.

It might be prudent to share the reasons/ tests done which is leading you to this conclusions.
It might be something simple like rust between the starter body and the engine block which is providing a poor ground path for starter current.
If you have any knowledge of using a multi meter you can be provided a simple series of voltage drop tests which can zero in on the problem.
