my manual says my overlap should be half the tube length, which is 21 inches.. my overlap is 9 inches.

to my understanding it should be 10 1/2?

This is when the mower is on the ground and 3 point is level and in the position where I would be mowing.

Its about half inch longer when raised off the ground for normal travel

Ok thanks.. I'll grease it up really good and put it back together..

Manual makes it seem like you're going to blow up the pto shaft or mower gearbox up if its not perfect

I mowed for years with something like a three inch overlap before I learned what it was supposed to be. It cam that way from the dealer and I never gave it a second thought. I have since purchased and cut a new drive shaft. The dealer never told me to secure that plastic sleeve at both ends (or either end for that matter) so I slowly best the sleeve to death not realizing how it should work.

Unless you have a couple hundred PTO horses, a small overlap is fine...and you don't.

Agreed, It's way worse to have them too long. You could easily wreck you transmission and/or implement with a PTO shaft that it too long.

I didn't see why you needed half the full length of the tube to be inside the shaft.. didn't make much sense being a little short..

Was just going by what the manual said.. just mowed the lawn for the 3rd time with it. Doing just fine
