'Saw' a tree had died, leaning against another and from the house, it looked like it might hit the fence, so I went out to slice and dice.
Got to it, 30" base (roots rotted/nonexistent), not going to hit the fence.Things from the house look closer than they are (like a car mirror). Well, I'm here, I'll cut it up. Damn, saw is not cutting fast, trunk must be petrified! So instead of the saw falling through, I had to work it some.No biggie.
Get through, the trunk shifts to one side and pinches the bar. Trudge back to the shop, get a hammer and wedges. Put three in, tap a little, saw falls out onto the ground, tree trunk shifts a little and lands on it, pretzeling the bar and burying the saw in the mud! Damn! Now I need a shovel!
I dig the saw out, filled with mud. Glad I shut it off when the bar got pinched. Done for today. Hose the saw off, remove the destroyed bar and chain, compressed air clean off the power head. Fired up fine - Phew!
Go to my STHIL shop... they are no longer opened on a Saturday!!! Grrrrrr

So you're saying you've had the normal productive day that we all have had, one time or another! 😋

That sounds like my average day with the saw in the woods 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Back in 2011 we got hit by a Tornado and I lost 13 trees. Got everything cleaned up finally.

Well in the middle of summer I was mowing the yard and passing one of my 100' tall oaks i saw daylight...... in the middle of the tree 🧐🧐🧐

I stop the mower, back up for a better look and realize the tree is split in half from about 2' off the ground going up 60' 😲😲😲😲

So I call pops, and he comes over with his old dodge 3/4 ton with 10 ton winch, and 200ft of cable.

We hook the tree about 40ft up. Chain his truck off to a tree on the other end of the property.

He gets tension on it, and I start to cut. I cut the wedge and half the tree drops down and pinch the bar.

Neighbor brings his saw over. I remove the motor from the bar and chain on mine, start cutting and it pops and pinches the neighbors bar and chain.

So I send my wife to town. She comes home with two more bars and chains for our saws.

I start cutting again, the tree pops and pinches another bar.

1 left to go. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I take another cut and get another pop. Pinches the bar and chain again.

I remove the motor and get it was out of the way.

Pops lays into the tree with the winch, and finally it comes down. 🥳🥳🥳🥳

I got back and collect all the bars and chains. Put the neighbors saw back together. Pop some cold ones and we celebrate fonally getting that bugger down.

That tree got so twisted up and gnarled from the tornado. It had multiple splits beside the 60ft one.

The further you are from the shop the more likely to happen.

Not anymore. They are somewhere on my wife's Facebook. My old desk top bought the big one a long time ago, and I'm probably on phone number 8 by now 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

We were probably 30ft off the back of the house where that tree was.

I have pictures possibly somewhere on here from the tornado damage. Unless they were posted using tap talk before the site update. If that's the case, then they aren't on here anymore either.

I have many, many pictures in my memories. Nobody still alive can verify the descriptions.

Why am I still alive? Its a sentence, I'm sure. To those left around me.

Ahhhhh... I did not think to remove the powerhead! Probably would of saved he bar and chain and kept my nice power head out of the mud. Thanks for the tip!

Sounds like my Monday -Friday work day. Minus the herding cats.
I'm sure you have/ will, but make sure the mud didn't get in the air filter. If you are lucky the tree will fall over by the time you get a new bar.

Sadly, not possible, the 30" trunk splits into two 20" making a 'Y' on another tree. I'll have to remove at least 15' to get it to fall. But... since there is nothing around that it can damage, I will not rush it. Maybe block and tackle now that its off the stump and winch it down.
I just checked the airfilter. No mud got in that area as the engine was shut down, some 'water splash' marks from when I hosed the exterior down.

Welp, saw store would not warranty the bar. But they gave me a 20% 'dumb ass' discount!
Owner told me another guy did the same thing last week except the tree landed on the powerhead of the most expensive STHIL saw ($1,700!!!!) and crushed it. I made out for $72 for a new bar and chain.

I tend to switch to Oregon bars and chains. Currently got 2 Oregon bars, and and the oem Husqvarna bar that came with my saw.

I can order a 3 pack of the Oregon speed chains off from Amazon. I think the last time I spent around $45 or so compared to $30 each in town.
