Done with R4 Tires in the SNOW!!!

I have R4 tires that came with my B7510, they stink in the snow.
I want to get new tires R3 Turf tires to fit on my existing rims and get rid of these R4 tires. Is it possible?
What is the best way to do it?

I have the R4's and have no problem with them,ofcourse a lot depends on the snow ice ect. Are your tires filled. wheel weights? Those things make a big difference as well. And yes check with your dealer sometimes they have tires and wheels that are take offs from another tractor and will give you a good price, remember you have to change all 4 tires not just the back ones

I'm using the R3's and so far quite impressed with how they have handled snow and ice. When I purchased tractor was thinking of going to R4's for winter and was told I would have to replace the rims as well due to the width.

Have you tried tire chains?

Guessing you get pretty good snow in NH.

Many say chains don't work with R4's, because the stretchers disappear into the threads. But they're fine if you keep them tight. I have chains on about half the year.

My seasonal changes/routines are:

Fall: MMM comes off, FEL and chains go on. (Service as needed)
Late-fall: FEL comes off, snowblower on.
Early-spring: Snowblower off, FEL on.
Spring: FEL and chains off, MMM on (Service as needed)

I would not be able to function without chains, whether I had R4 or R3. My tires are loaded, but a BX tire doesn't hold much fluid.

Mine are good quality 2-link chains. I think I got them for ~$80 from my local hardware store. Your B7510 will be bigger than my BX.

Checked with my dealer this morning about some turf tires for mine. He did give me a very good price for a set of mounted tires but there is freight involved for the purchase. Can't blame them for that though. He said I should try out the R4 tires before making up my mind though. I am kind of worried about tearing up the yard with the R4s.

Assuming you can wait for delivery, ask them if they can ship on a stock delivery. Stock delivery would be when they are receiving tractors and other items for stock. If transported this way (versus UPS, common carrier, etc) will typically be less money... maybe even free.

The great price is because they are selling complete tire/wheel assembly through “wholegoods” which is priced through the sales department not the parts counter.

The R4 tires are a narrower tire as compared to the R3's. I believe if you found a tire that would fit the rim width it would also be too tall. Please correct me if I'm incorrect.

I was not sure about R4's but went with them and I am not having any problems so far. I did put a set of rubber tire chains on so that may be a help, they are not necessarily made for R4's but I worked with them and have the bands adjusted as good as I can. Last snow storm I pushed a lot of snow uphill and they did fine, only had to lift the back blade once when it built up with snow pack but front blade just peeled the snow away.

That's been my experience too. I installed Carlisle Trac Chief i3's, and use a 60" box blade for snow removal. They are hands down undeniably better at moving snow,
than the Bridgestone diamond tread turfs I removed.

My B7610 had turfs.

33x12.5x15 and 23x8.5x12 if I remember correctly. Fronts were getting hard to source. Rears are available but spendy. A TSL bogger truck tire was a perfect rolling circumference match.

My R4s have been surprisingly well this winter. They are brand new, so still have some "sharp" edges to them. Id try chains before you go spending likely $1300 for turfs.....

Yeah, Max - don't recall your part of NY, but I know you've experienced some snows where chains were a necessity. R1/R3/R4 - no matter.

The 34" we had last March 14 all came in a few hours (anniversary of '93 Blizzard) - I could not have done it without some help, and it was tough even w/chains.

Like you said, try chains before spending a lot of $$ on wheels/tires, then decide you need chains anyway.....

My rubber chains are working okay for me but if I were going with steel chains with R4s I would get some that were the duo style where there were links riding on top of the tread because some of the cross links will fall into the tread:

Another reasonable option is a ladder chain with only 2 link spacing. I use those on my R4's and there are so many cross links that they ride on top of the ribs in the center of the tire. Having as many cross links also smooths out the ride a little on the pavement.

I find the talk about the ladder style chains falling into the tread interesting. Most people with this problem show a photo of the top of the tire with the ladders down below the lugs. I've ran ladders for decades on R1's with nothing but increased traction to show for it.

You see, at the bottom of the tire where the "rubber meets the road," the ladders fall out from their resting place between the lugs and get pinched between the tire and the ground/road surface. This is evidenced by the impression left in the ground or snow of the ladder across the lugs.

The duo grip combos are very nice chains however.

My R4 were loaded. And the previous winter I used rear chains! Chains aren't a good option since I have pavers and pavement and don't want to make them up!!
I bought the Turf tires for $1000 from the dealer, made 10/6/17!! Looking forward to another 12 years.

I grooved and siped my rear Tru-powers and my front R4s - have 0 problems in snow two winters now and we just got a butt load of wet, greasy, heavy snow.

I have R4s. They worked ok depending on what the conditions were. Sooner or later I knew I'd need chains.
I bought the Kubota spacers. Then, Aquiline MPC. Not bad on the asphalt and work great staying on top of the lugs.
