Today I figured I would pull out a couple more trees buy the roots,, OK dead ash chained it up went to a big old black walnut with a 5 pull block hoist and after a bit of coxing down and out it came... Cool ,,, A dead dogwood beside it should be a snap right? WRONG ! I dont know how the root balls are on dogwoods but I could not budget it,, not even a little bit! Snapped the upper part off but the root ball, nada. Guess the saw will take it off at ground level I just dont want to mow over the damned thing

cut it as low as possible, dig around it a little then burn what's left. It won't come back. I have had to do several of them like that. Those and crepe myrtles both.

Do as Lugbolt mentioned. Get a couple of bag of charcoal briquets and light them up right on the stump!

Years ago I was going to help my neighbor by pull a 6 inch mamosa stump out of his yard. The 4wd L235 would not do it . Got my 4 door 4wd f250 diesel and tied to the stump along with the L235. 8 holes later from spinning tires we got the axe and matic out and dug down low enough to cut the stump below ground level. That thing must of had roots to china.

Skeets- -

I'm further north, but up here them things form thickets all connected together. There's several different species of dogwoods, and some are different than others, but I think they all grow the same.

Kinda like Honeysuckle that I'm always wrestling with.

I don't think pulling them is in the cards. Use the other methods mentioned...then maybe Round Up..

I saw a technique online once where a guy cut the trunk off low to the ground. After letting it sit for a week or two to dry out, he then used the tip of his saw to form a bowl in the stump. He filled that with a solvent (Diesel? Charcoal lighter?) and let it soak in overnight. Then, he filled the bowl with charcoal, lit it off and threw a scrap of expanded metal over it to hold down big sparks. Burned the stump way below grade level.

Sounds like a great technique but AZ tree stumps are pretty small compared to what you get back there.

Let us know how it works. The 4th is coming up. You can always use explosives. :)

If you are a patient sort, apparently you can kill and dry out/rot a stump over a few weeks using Epson salts.

Skeets I had about a 16" diameter cedar stump that need to go.

Cut it off at the ground then used a 3/4" x 18" drill bit and drilled bunch of holes it in. Filled holes with some diesel and let sit over night.

Next morning added some more fuel and covered it with a 55 gallon drum that has a 12'x12" hole cut in it I use for making coals when making deer jerky.

With drum upside down square hole was at the top pointed so wind could blow in hole, I filled with limbs and old wood I had and lit it a fire. I packed some dirt around bottom to keep fire from getting away.

I would drive by on 4 wheeler ever couple of hours and throw in more wood, worked great. This started burning on Saturday morning and fizzled out that night but some more wood on it Sunday morning and ever few hours and Monday it was like I wanted it.

Lessons learned, drilling the holes in it or like mentioned plunge the saw in it will be needed or was for mine.

I'll use it again for my next stump but will drill more holes in it and plunge the saw in the center few more times.
