The Dodge Ram 1500 is the fourth-generation Dodge Ram, and has been in production since 2009. Combined with all other Dodge Ram models, domestic 2011 sales reached 156,900. While the trucks’s unit sales are far more than the rest of the vehicles on this list, they are far less than its own total sales from previous years. In 2006 the model sold 227,600 trucks. The 1500 has poor fuel efficiency, with 14 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway. It also has particularly high owner costs, low predicted reliability, and high predicted depreciation. You are a cat bird,,lol,,, Though I did read some place that Dodge was going to or checking into putting a smallish diesel in the 1500, in 2013 or 2014. If I remember right, it was a turbo charged 6 in around the 300 cu in range. I don't remember if it was a Cummings or some german desigin

I had seen where Ford planed to do that a few years ago with the F-150. At the time it sounded all well and good but Ford could not find anybody to build a highway diesel small enough to fit under the hood of a F-150. Dodge might have the same exact problem as well. But with diesel prices being at where they are who in the hell in their right mind would want a 6cyl diesel in a 1/2 ton truck?

I had always been a Ford guy, until I bought a Dodge 2500 CTD a couple of years ago. I have found the Dodge to be more than adequete for what I do, and on par with anything else that I have owned- Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki. Everything breaks, and everything has faults. I would own another Dodge in a heartbeat.
Some of your info is incorrect- the 1500 came into production in 94- they are on the 4th generation of the 1500 now. Prior to 1994, it was the 150.

The best truck on the road is the one that stays out of the shop. I have 206,000 miles on my Dodge, and see no end in sight. I'd drive it across the country tomorrow.

At first, when I read your post, Eric, I thought that maybe you had been hacked. It didn't sound like you.

As for a diesel in the 1/2 ton Dodge and Ford, I had read that those plans were scrapped. Who knows.

"diesel in an f150" I can vouch for that . It was Ryder. They had a 4 cylinder in an e150 but the trans would not live. I happened to be doing the trans work in Chatt Tn for Ryder when one of the factoy reps from Tx ( I think) was in Chatt. One of there mechs told him about me and how I was able to modify transmissions to make them last. I couldn't believe it when he opened the hood and there was a 4 cyl diesel. It pulled like crazy but the trans was sloppy. I took me several trys but when I was through, I was imprressed. The last time I saw him , the van had 100,000 miles on my tranny and he was still driveing it, allthough they had since canceled the project. Never saw him after that.

Hodge I has just copied and pasted this from Comcast.com home page. I just threw it on here to heckle with the Dodge owners. Ive never been a fan of Dodge. I dont care for their styling. The transmissions dont hold up well and the paint jobs are awefull and that doesnt last long either. My friend has a 2000 Dodge 1500 and it has more rust on it and looks like hell compaired to my 87 Ford Bronco.

Besides Ford is the best selling truck for the last 35 years in a row. Hell thats 4 years older then I am LOL

I'm going to continue keeping my mouth shut on the heckling thing....

I'd love to see some smaller efficiency sized diesels on the market. I'm not really sure what the reasoning is (perhaps if our noncommercial diesel consumption was on par with Europe's the price of diesel would be even higher?) but if the Tacoma came with a small 3-4 cylinder diesel I'd have bought that in a heart beat over the gasoline 4 cyl.

Diesel fuel will NEVER be cheaper the gas ever again. Thanks to the tree hugger nazi's that bitched whined and moaned about diesel fuel polluting this planet. Diesle used to be one of the cruder forms of fuel you got. Very little was done to diesel to refine it and they didnt have to dump as many chemicals in it to clean it up. Thus todays USLD {ultra low sulfer diesel} has less natural sulfer and more checmicals to take out the sulfer.

It has gotten so bad in the diesel market that Ford is actually looking into offering a V10 engine in their medium duty trucks like the F650 and F750.

It is politics. Toyota, Nissan, Mazda- they all have small, powerful, fuel effecient diesels. But, they can't keep up with the ever-evolving EPA mandates. VW stays a couple of years ahead- that is why they are the only small diesel in the US.
My friend, a missionary in Haiti, has a 2011 Toyota Landcruiser wagon. 5 speed, inline 6 diesel, bulletproof. Nothing made here in the states compares- I have been all over that truck, and his previous one, and will attest to the fact that the US manufactures just won't build a vehicle like that- they could, but aren't doing it. It is super heavy, and loaded with 8 adults and bags full of meds (doing medical clinics), off road a good part of the time, it averages 18 or so. I calculated that myself, not someone telling me what it gets.

Eric, I have owned a lot of Ford's, and have an 85 Bronco down in Haiti. My dad has an 03 F350/V-10. I am open minded- I would own another Ford, but I love my Dodge. To each his own, but none are better than the other. I have had Ford's with bad transmissions, a Ford that they repainted because the paint didn't bond, a Ford with a bad engine in 120,000 miles (well cared for, should have gone longer), a Ford that I repeatedly had to replace the slave cylinder, concentric, on the transmission. Bad design, plastic, no aftermarket replacement that was any better. All vehicles have their flaws.
And, for what it's worth, I'd much rather have my Cummins inline 6, where I can reach, work on, and see the ground, than a powerstroke that the cab has to be removed to do any work to it.

Eric, you are a catbird. Needle all you want- I personally don't take offense, and anytime you want to see how tough that bronco is, I have a heavy chain behind my seat...

ive got a 91 dodge d250, 2wd,long bed reg cab cummins. it averages btwn 26 and27mpg. i beat the snot outa it and aint had problem with the trans or anything else. its got 151 on the ticker and is fully loaded. best dang truck ive owned!

Ya know funny thing is I cant remember the last time I saw a Dodge anything from the 70's on the road today! I cant count the number of 70's model Ford trucks I see up and down the roads on a daily basis still kicking. They may look like ever living hell but their still screaming!

I'm probably reading these charts wrong but as far as I can tell Europe's diesel emissions standards are just as tough as ours if not more so but yeah I can buy it's all politics.

I'd love to build myself something like thisthis. Listen to that Detroit purr! Though I imagine driving two sticks in city traffic gets old fast :) so bad though if it was a range tranny instead of a splitter.... I love day dreaming projects that will never happen.

Stumpy all it is, is a 4 speed manual transmission with a 2 speed split rear end. That dude got fancy with it and wants to work his ass off for no reason. The short stick closer to him was the hi/lo range selector to split shift with. On the typical split shift tranny the hi/lo range selector was on the stick you shifted gears with.

I know exactly what it is. Semi's usually use a pneumatic shifter on the second transmission to make life easy for the driver but there are plenty of examples of manually shifted secondary transmissions most tractors included. Somewhere on youtube I saw a video of a bus with a Detroit in it that had three sticks! I was also making the distinction between a range and a splitter transmission.

My first truck was a 10 year old 65 Dodge w/225 slant six. I was a teenager and could not kill that thing. Next a 79 Dodge 1/2 ton bought new, it was a POS. Couple of Ford trucks that were Great! A 97 Dodge that was pretty good, but had to rebuild the rear end and trans before it hit 100k.

Now I have a 02 Dakota quad 4.7 4wd that I absolutely love and have had no problems. Paid 12k for it 3 years ago with 35k miles on it. :D

Also have a 94 Toyota 4 banger 4wd with 265k that has had NO problems! Still has the original clutch and rear brakes :eek:

Edit to add;
Oh and I saved enough $ when I bought the Dakota used, instead of new, to buy the L3800DT. :D

I am on my second Dodge/ Cummins powered. I LOVE the '07, 5.9, 6spd stick, 4x4 I have now.
I was at a heavy truck parts shop yesterday and the counterman had a '92 Dodge/Cummins powered 4x4 automatic with 760,000 miles on the original engine and trans.
I get 17.5 mpg in town and 21mph highway.
