Do I need a truck probably not but it is sure easier to haul stuff, where I would need to take the trailer when I had my Wrangler. I still have a trailer as my truck is not built to handle one ton coal bags, or long boards.
I bought it to use, to take me wherever I need to go.....

I have had my Chevy Silverado since new in 2007. It has almost 110,000 miles on it now and more than 100,000 of those miles were put on it while towing or hauling. I have other vehicles for other duties but my trucks are for hauling or towing.

I use my truck most weeks for hauling stuff and then towing the boat and other trailers at least monthly as well as several weeks of off roading in the sand down in Hatteras NC every year. My truck is a tool not a cowboy Cadillac.

I might use the 4wd 3 or 4 times a year. But I prefer to have it and not need it versus need it and not have it.
I pull the trailer on occasion when needed. So far once this year. But it was a worthy cause (wooden Play set for the grandson). I haul the trash once or twice a week in the bed. But realistically could do that in the trunk of a car.
I had pickup when I was younger. Then followed some advice from my grandfather and purchased a sport utility.
Literally 5 days after purchasing the sport utility, I ended up having to trade vehicles with a buddy for a day since I needed a truck bed for something.
Once the sport utility had the radish, I've been in trucks ever since.
It's the same philosophy as the 4wd. I rather have it and not need it versus needing it and not having it.

Sounds to me like she's the brains of the outfit! Just kidding .... 
I have a 22 F350 4X4 crew with 8' box. Back seats were folded up before I left the dealership. It's packed 3/4 to the ceiling with bins and tools. I have a 6.5" tall one piece fiberglass space cap in the bed full of equipment, tools and supplies. Most of the trucks around here haul a bit of sports gear or a camper a couple times a year. Very few work.
"Need" is only one of the criteria in making purchasing decisions. Whether it ranks high or low depends a lot upon the "want" factor. Right now I have a Trailblazer with 270,000 miles on it, a receiver-mounted carrier and a small trailer for the few times that there's something to haul. We're better served with inside space for people and stuff. I WANT a Tahoe but not badly enough to buy one at the current prices. There's going to be a cool-down and I'm hoping it triggers some real sales.
The little Ford 1210 I bought around 1990 and was my sole piece of equipment for 10 years would still be all the tractor I NEED. Since then I've had a B7500, L3200 and now an L4240. I still own the Ford and it does get occasional use. Most recently it has become our version of a UTV with the addition of a 3-point carryall.

I have been frequently asked over the years why I have never owned a pickup truck considering all the work I do. I prefer to have a V8 powered SUV to haul my 7000 lb. tandem trailer with. A lot easier to park or maneuver in tight spaces when not hauling. The vast majority of the building materials for my 30 x 52-foot two story shop that I built 10 years ago came in the trailer. Even the SUV is seldom driven now as it is only a second vehicle. 10000 miles in 4 years. Been part Scotch I prefer the gas sipping Toyota.

Thank you. I was going to reply in a similar vein, but not nearly as polite.
Mine is a short box 4 door 4WD but it's the furthest thing from a "Cowboy Cadillac". I take care of it mechanically but otherwise it gets rode hard and put away wet. I can count the number of times it's been washed in the 11 years I've owned it on one hand and have a nose-picker left.
