Have been considering a core aerator for awhile. Today I went ahead with the purchase of a CPG 60. About a hour drive to a dealer that had one. Looks well made in the USA. Fourty spoons, weighing 200 pounds.
I purchased a 72" core aerator from Everything Attachments a couple years ago in which I've been very happy with. It's a drum design that weighs over 700 lbs. filled with sand. I also place cider blocks on the top rack to add weight then ratchet strapped them down. Our soil is a loam clay that can be tough to get long plugs but I've found that some moisture in the soil makes a big difference.
Sounds like a sub-soiler would help also. Wouldn't have to go deep, but 12" would do a lot to break up the top layer. You didn't state how big an area you are going to work, but if you went every 4 feet or so you'd find the ground absorbs moisture much better.
