Digging bucket cleanup attachment

Thought I’d share this in case someone else is looking for the same thing I was. I only have a digging bucket with 3 extra large welded teeth on my BH4672 so it’s hard not to leave a lot of loose material in the bottom of a trench.

I searched the forums and the internet for quite a while today and couldn’t find anything like this. (though I have no idea what it would be called so that may be on me)

Anyway, it’s not pretty but it’s solid and cost nothing since it was made of scraps that were sitting around. The cross piece is 5/16” plate and supported by the teeth. The sides are 1/4” and mounts with a single 7/16 bolt on either side. The teeth fit tight in the angled tube so there shouldn’t be any force on the bolts.

like I said, it’s for cleaning out the loose material, not for digging so it shouldn’t take much of a beating anyway.

Hopefully this helps someone else out and if there’s a name for it please add it to the thread to help the next person find it easier.

I too have that problem and I found an old "crumbing blade" from a TLB, missing some teeth. Gonna try and get something fabricated in 2021.

On a trencher they call that a "crumber". It's bolted to the bar on top off the chain and is spring loaded. this provides pressure on the bottom of the trench and drags the crumbs along and leaves a clean ditch.

Bill, I had a tough time even writing that description. The word C-R-U-M-B just doesn't seem right. I asked my wife how to spell it, then looked in the dictionary. Then add E-R on the end really gets confusing (for my brain),

I always took the crumber off my trenchers because they do limit what you can do when digging shallow and needing to swing an arc with the trench. When digging deep, especially a frost footing, they are real nice.

NO TOOLS ?? WTH I NEED a welder to attachthe anchor,then need to use the supplied chainbinder to ATTACH the gizmo....

The rain stopped for a few hours and I tried out the new attachment. It's hard to tell from the picture but the difference is night and day in this footing trench that is about 12" deep and 24" wide. It has no trouble digging through medium density material and I can get nearly all the loose material out of the trench on the second pass. The rain is back so I have to wait to do any more digging.

I did a lot of work burying water and power out to the shop in the spring and wish I had thought of this then, it would have saved a ton (maybe literally) of hand digging. I went looking for a cleanup bucket at that time and couldn't find anything under about $1200.

I also noticed even that little bit of metal on the sides make the bucket into more of a scoop and directs a lot more into the bucket when scooping up the loose material. Not sure if more metal on the sides would improve it more, I will have to pay closer attention next time I use it.

Rain held off and I managed to finish my trenching this morning. Watching the material closely, I don’t think more metal on the sides would improve the volume collected by much however it looks like it would put stress on the mounting bolts so I think it’s pretty good just how it is.

That is actually really cool and I can see it as a great enhancement.

I never felt much of a need for that with my BL4690 backhoe, but it probably would have made life easier sometimes.

I like it! Especially EASY on and off!

I feel kinda silly now. To accomplish the same thing, I bought another bucket and removed the teeth.

If I could've found a bucket nearby in the spring I'd probably be the proud owner of two buckets as well. As it turned out, this time I had to wait on the weather and wasn't in the mood to spend money so I got my brain in gear, the welder fired up and a bunch of cutoff disks later here we are.

That's a mighty nice and clean looking bucket you have in the last photo though!

I actually have (4) buckets, the toothless 14" one, a toothed 14", a toothed 10", and another toothed 14" that came with my 2nd B670 parts hoe.

Looks like that bucket was from something else and modified to fit your B670 parts hoe...I assume it will also fit your operating hoe?

It will fit the operating hoe, because it is a stock B670 bucket, virtually identical to my others.
I believe what looks like a modification is that someone cut off the original "ears" and replaced them because of wear in the holes. This bucket is severely worn, but the holes in the replaced ears are less worn.

I’ve heard those referred to as “butter bars”. When I was hauling equip, the power plant wouldn’t let any excavators with teeth on the property.... no idea why. The mechanics would always weld the butter bar on before I left the yard.
