Many (over 60) years ago when I was a kid, our neighbor had this "funny sounding" car with a name I had never seen (Mercedes Benz) and in dead of winter it could be heard out there running all night. (it was a little Benz 190D). He had a fuel tank on the side of the garage. He was getting heating oil delivered to his home but did not have a oil heater. But, to "fool" the tax people as he said he ran a small line into the garage where it was basically just for show. He said there was no road tax on heating fuel so IIRC he was paying less than $.10 gal.
He said heating oil and diesel were the same thing minus road tax. He never had an issue.

Way back in the day I had a somewhat of a weird cousin, who owned one of those things. It sounded like every rod in the thing was about to come through the block. Funny how some posts can stir long forgotten memories. :)

It will do 100 mph.
Not enough?
Did you ever ride in one? I made two trips across PA in the stupid things. You had to look back miles before daring to merge. Apparently they will do 99 MPH if you have all afternoon to make it happen and they will not even hold the speed limit on the turnpike upgrades.

"Different strokes for different folks"
My dad had a 5 speed Rabbit diesel pickup.
It would pass a lot of fuel stations with an honest 50 mpg.

It had a 4 spd trans on the tree too. But oh yeah it was slow. 0-60 was like a day and a half. But he sure loved it. He even rigged in a second fuel tank under the rear package shelf. The guy did nice work as well. It was a boat tank.
