I am wanting to buy 30 gallons of diesel fuel at a time to cut down trips to the station. Do I need to treat the fuel if it sets for a couple months before I use it up? If so what should I use?

Re: Diesel fuel storage

Bad idea with a B3350. They are really sensitive to any kind of contaminant, especially water.

In any case treat fuel with an anti fungal, preferably one that also either disperses water or aids in its separation so you can get it out in the water separator, store fuel with as little airspace as possible in container, use a water filter funnel, Mr Funnel. Use a cetane boosting treatment in the winter and make sure you are running winter diesel.

Re: Diesel fuel storage

I think poorly of cetane boosters. But I do like and recommend JB/Biobor anti-fungal and Stabil stabilizer. If you use it in winter below 15-degrees F then you’ll also want an anti-gel.
I store mine in an old steel 160 gallon propane tank, pumping it with 10 psi of shop air thru a water-filter on the exit valve. Works great, no problems, store it for about a year before needing to refill the tank. I use the fuel in my M4700, my RTV-X900 and my 1987 Ferguson 5-8B asphalt compactor/roller (John Deere 4329 diesel.)

Re: Diesel fuel storage

Like sheepfarmer said, with a B3350 it's a bad idea to store fuel for any length of time, as stored fuel absorbs water if not 100% stored correctly.

If you do store it, look into a water separator filter for the output of the storage tank.
Treating the fuel with anything will help the fuel quality but it will not remove the water, and a little water in the fuel can have really bad effects on your motors emissions system. ;)

Re: Diesel fuel storage

Does Kubota sell a fuel additive that won’t hurt the dpf?

Re: Diesel fuel storage

They used to, and I used it on my 3560, but no longer available. Dealer recommended Powerservice. I have used that too, no obvious problem on my dpf regen system, but it is different from that on a B3350.

Re: Diesel fuel storage

Thanks sheepfarmer, I’ll check tomorrow when I take my tractor tomorrow to get the dpf fixed.

FYI: Diesel does not go BAD like gasoline, so no need to treat it just to add shelf life.

DPF fixed?
I really hope it's still in warranty for your sake, at $2689.90 just for the part.

Have you read up on here on all the issues with the B3350's?

Re: Diesel fuel storage

So what's so problematic about the B3350? Is it a common rail engine? I ask for my own education on the newer tractors with emissions.

Re: Diesel fuel storage

My tractor has 300 hours on it, it went into a regen last week, then lights started flashing and beepers beeping. I got the manual out and followed the instructions for a parked regeneration. That led to a red light failure. That’s how I found this forum. I will say I felt sickened after reading about the issues with the B3350’s dpf.
Friday I contacted the dealer who said Kubota has figured out the problems with this tractor and My warranty will cover it (with kubota’s approval). Otherwise it’s a $6000.00 repair. After reading all the problems I don’t know how my tractor made it so long.
So I’m heading to the dealership in a bit. Btw. I bought my tractor used, it has a five year transferable warranty provided by Kubota. Wish me luck***128591;

Actually the problem with it is that it is not a common rail engine. It uses a very complicated method involving both a catalytic converter and a reformer to heat exhaust up to a hot enough temperature to clean the dpf, and it has been full of difficulties.

That's the same system the 2013 VW Jetta we bought and sold back to VW had. It was constantly in regen. It was too bad because the car really performed well from a power standpoint.

Yes we wish you no ill will, glad you have some warranty protection.
Just sad that they can't get a handle on the issues and come up with a permanent fix, I've heard of a lot of B3350 owners swinging in the wind.

Re: Diesel fuel storage

I dropped off the tractor yesterday leaving it with feeling disappointed. I’m worried that it will never be right; I wish Kubota could get a mulligan and pull off all the epa stuff and promise to do better....
Well that’s not gonna happen and it sounds like there’s not a promise this repair is a final fix. If Kubota made an offer like VW I’d bite. So now I don’t know whether to hang onto or cut my losses.
Does anyone have the latest fix with any time on it? Kubota is replacing the dfp and I believe the reformer (if that’s the super heating elbow); the dealer says a $6k repair? Can anyone recommend and let me know what kind of repair manual to get?

Re: Diesel fuel storage

Most of the actual fixes to the regen system need for someone to access the computer on board the tractor with diagnostic software. However make sure you have the operators manual and ask the dealer to provide you with a copy of the shop manual as a pdf file, or at the very least print out the introductory pages for the regen system so you will understand how it works. Some problems can be avoided by a savvy user. It is not forgiving of people who don't follow directions. :( It is a really complicated system, but they have been making changes so an up to date copy would be helpful. The wsm will help you with other features of the tractor.

Some folks have gotten along fine, so fingers crossed you will too.

A Moderator just renamed this thread as it seems more appropriate, as the OP is still actively engaged in the conversation about his tractor and it's needs / issues. ;)

Seems like a good idea, since the fuel quality bears directly on the regen problems.
