Yes, I searched and after reading many posts I think I have my answer but want to be sure.

RCK48R-21G gearbox leaking and empty. I have the manuals for this and I'm not sure why but the WSM says to refer to page PG-18 and the book stops at page PG-14. Grrr.

I want to verify this is the fill plug on top.

This bolt/plug on the side was missing, probably shook out and puked all the oil out. I assume it's a short 8x1.25 with a copper gasket, seal or something and just want to verify. It's an oil level hole plug, right?

Thank You!

Yes. The upper check plug.

I have a question since we are on gearboxes. I have a ZD326 and I’m going to change the oil in the gearbox. The manual states GL3 class oil 85W90 weight. GL3 is tough to find, GL4 and GL5 are everywhere. Dealer says GL5 is ok. Thoughts?

The larger hole on top is the fill hole. The upper side bolt you pointed out is the fill to line. If that box is dry... I'd pop the cover and inspect the bevel gears. The lower shaft seal under the pulley was the culprit that costs me a smidge more than $1000.00 ... yep a grand for the new gear box. My gears were trashed and metal shavings were in the bearings... The whole box assembly complete with the pulley ready to bolt on the deck was significantly cheaper than buying the parts and rebuilding it myself. Good luck... as it is dry for a reason... the lower seal is easy to replace once you pop the pulley... a little time and about $15 will save your box....

API GL-3 is just an older spec. An 80w-90 or 75w-90 GL-5 will work fine.

GL-4 would work too, but nowadays is harder to find and is used for manual transmissions, but that's beyond the scope of your question.

That was my thoughts, are there any bronze bushings inside the gearbox like in manual transmissions? I don’t think GL5 will hurt anything

The last one I took apart only had ball bearings and a spacer to keep the one shaft's bearings apart.

And the amount of EP additives (containing phosphorous) is sufficiently low so as to be backward compatible with earlier units that have "yellow metals". The advantage of the EP additive far outweighs the imagined insult to "yellow metals" in older units. (For EP to harm bronze/brass/copper it must be at much higher concentrations than found in GL5. BTW, I ran GL5 in my 9N Ford tranny for 15 years with absolutely no problems or leaks, despite all the old wives cries.)

This old wives tale is similar to someone arguing against using the latest grade of motor oil in their 8N Ford, insisting upon only non-det, straight-wt oil. The grades are all backward compatible.
