To All, thanks for all the insight, troubleshooting techniques, etc.
CC Wax , I didn't kill it either.

she's been running excellent ever since.

Thanx again!

Great job!!!!!!!!

One bonus point for resuscitating a Kubota!!!! :D :D :D :D

After tracing all through and following all troubleshooting ideas, I went back to square one. Using a test light and connecting to the ground and then to the pos post of the battery, I measured a good 12+ v. When measuring on the positive post of the starter I measured 4+ V.

Hello all. Sorry to thread-jack but I also have a B5200 and have a no-start issue. I did some google searching and found this thread so I create a screen-name so I could post.

I tried every thing suggested to the OP and still have a dead tractor. My situation is a bit worse as this tractor is a third generation hand-me-down and the prior operators did zero maintenance. The tractor did previously start but my brother phoned me one day asking to use the tractor to move some heavy items. Against better judgment I let him use it and according to him, he never got it to start. My guess is he kept the choke out why trying to get it to turn over without actually kicking off the glow-plug first.

From the battery posts I register a full 12.5 volt charge and from the positive terminal to the small gauge post on the starter I also register 12.5 volts so from reading this thread, I don't think my issue is the switch. I had already purchased a new starter before finding this thread so I don't think it is that. What else should I check?

Also, I tried connecting a wire from the starter post on the starter to the positive battery terminal and got nothing (with the new starter too). What is especially weird is if I let the tractor sit for a while (several hours) and retry it straight with the key, the motor spins for half-second then stops and won't try again until I let it set for a good while.

Help

Make sure battery terminals are not wired up backwards. If wired correct make sure terminals are CLEAN if clean take battery off and take to advance or napa and have it tested just because it test 12 volts with multimeter does not mean its good. If battery test good have starter tested at same place . I bought 1 starter for a truck put it on guess what bad starter. Took back ordered another one told them to test it before I put it on. The man said its new I said yes so was the other one I returned. My niece worked there and said give me the starter and she tested it guess what it was bad. Ordered the 3 one it was tested it was good. So a new starter or battery should be tested before you walk out door with them all of mine are. Sorry for a long story but you may have a bad starter or battery if wired up right and all cables are clean. One thing you can do to test starter is get a known good battery out of vehicle and hook it up direct to starter before pulling that one off. But make sure every thing is out of gear.Forgot welcome to site kubotakillerjr.handy

Thanks for the welcome. I think that battery might still be under warranty with Advanced auto parts. I'll have them test it and the starter and see what happens.

The vendor I bought the starter from included a "test report" print out report, but for all i know, that could be a photocopy the pack with every starter :(

Didn't get to the part of taking it to get it tested. I used the 12V supply of the jump box and tapped the chassis (ground) and the larger bolt on the starter. Using a small wire I tapped the smaller gauge cable connector and the tractor tried to turn over (everything started spinning).

I sprayed some starter fluid in the intake and the Kubota lives! Tomorrow I'm going to replace the battery leads with fresh ones and try it the normal way. At least I know the engine is all good and the starter is healthy.

KKJR,

Also be sure that the bolts and other hardware are not rusty or corroded. Had a similar problem with my ground wire. Connection was clean and tight but the bolt was a little rusty and I would get intermittent starts.

WHAT ! ! ! ! !

You should never use that crap!!! Fastest way to kill an engine that I know of and I have had to replace MANY engines for that kind of damage.

There are other ways to start a diesel that does not damage and is just as effective.

aquaforce is correct. Don't use starting fluid in/on/around your Kubota. If you do, you'll truely live up to your OTT name. See the following article that Mr. K and Vic put together:

I only did it once to test all the mechanics. I saw light at the end of the tunnel when the jump box directly to the starter got things spinning. :(

Wow  I need to show that article to the guy who suggested I use starter fluid. He said there was something wrong with his ignition system so he wired around the main switch and put in a momentary push-start button. His is also a diesel so I asked him exactly how he was kicking off the glow plugs if he is not using his factory switch. Starter fluid was his answer....

Have not had time to change the battery cable leads. My jeep started acting up. Push throttle down, start accelerating, ESP light starts flickering, engine looses power. Engine revs fine in Park or Neutral but in gear it felt like a transmission issue (Just what I need after fixing a broken valve spring). I disabled ESP and started accelerating normally then all my warning lights on my dash came on (ABS / ESP / 4WD system).:mad: Turns out its not as bad as I thought. Codescanner said its a bad wheel speed sensor. Guess the ESP was doing its job. Bad data from the sensor made ESP think I was spinning on ice :)

Starter fluid aside, what are other ways to get a diesel tractor started when it spins but won't "turn over"?

Back in the early 60's we used burning diesel soaked rags in the air intake of dozers to get em going of a cold morning, no Hse around then:D .Modern day variant is to use a propane torch, the air filter is removed first. This is not a reccomendation for the pactice which could get your baby a little hot n bothered;):D

No propane torch :( . I can't recall my predecessors ever changing the glow plugs in the engine so in addition to changing the battery leads, think I should upgrade those too?

Aquaforce ,B7100 over at TVA i have watched some of those people take dampened rags in gasoline take off breather and let fumes go in breather to help them start when very cold . NOT PURE GASOLINE just the vapors. I ask one guy about it he said we do it all the time never had 1 incident and he had been doing it for over 10 years then. I AM NOT telling anyone to do this just see what you think? handy
