I grew up in the 50's and 60's. In 1968 I was a Senior in High School. It was getting towards the end of the school year and graduation. In a fit of derring-do, I decided to skip school after lunch. I'd NEVER done such a thing before.

I was walking around town doing this and that, waiting for school to let out so I could go back and get on the bus to go home. When I got home, I caught about six kinds of hell!

Seems one of the Sheriff's Deputies had seen me, knew who I was, knew who my Mom was, called her and let her know. Mom hadn't lived or worked in town for 13+ years by then and we lived on a farm 10 miles out of town. Didn't matter, my goose was cooked.

If I had ever skipped school, my mom would have seen to it that I wouldn't be able to sit down to this very day! I knew that and that is what kept me in line.

My high school had a tradition of “senior skip day”. It wasn’t endorsed by the administration but wasn’t discouraged either. Usually about 75% of the seniors didn’t show up on skip day.

1985, year I was a senior, we had a new principal and vice principal that decided to tighten up. They made it known skipping on senior skip day would not be tolerated. About half of us didn’t show up despite the warning. First and only time I skipped school.

Principal and vice principal split up the list of around 75 students and called all our parents the day we skipped. My father worked in a factory and didn’t take outside phone calls. My mother rarely went to town, but that particular day, she was in town. My brother was about 23, shortly out of college, and living at home for a little bit while he was working third shift and getting himself together to move out.

When I got home, my brother asked me if I went to school that day. Told him no, it was senior skip day so I’d gone fishing with a couple friends. He said, “Oh, that explains it.” But then wouldn’t tell me what it explained.

Next day all of us skippers were called into the VP’s office one at a time for consequences ranging from a good dressing down to suspension, depending on our prior record. When I got there, the principal and the guidance counselor came in as well. The VP asked me where I’d been yesterday. Told him it was senior skip day so I went fishing. He said OK, don’t do that again, but that’s not really the point of this meeting. He asked if I was having any trouble at home. Told him no, all was well. He said to he honest; they had resources to help me if I needed help. I just stared at him, confused. Then asked me if I truly felt safe at home. I was still confused. Told them all yes, I was safe at home.

VP asked if I knew he spoke to my father yesterday morning. Then it made sense. Told him no, I wasn’t aware. He said even though he’d been a Marine, he had never been screamed at, cussed and insulted so creatively, and threatened in such a vile manner as he had yesterday for simply asking my father if he knew where I was. Told him that was odd. Never seen my father like that. They all stared at me in silence for a very long two minutes. VP asked me to let my father know no one from the school would ever call our house again, and I was dismissed to return to class.

That evening, told my brother about the meeting at school. He said when the VP called mid-morning, it woke him from a dead sleep with his first words being, “Mr. _____, do you know where your son is right now?” My brother, still half asleep, was less than amused with this prank call waking him to ask about a son he didn’t have. His sleep fuzzy mind didn’t connect that Mr. ____ might be our father and I might be the missing son. He said he never thought about me skipping school because that wasn’t like me at all. If I ever did something like that again, give him a heads up so he could cover for me without embarrassing the family or potentially getting Social Services involved.

I still don’t know what exactly he said to the VP. We’ve never spoken of it again. My brother and I certainly weren’t telling our parents and the school admin people were scared to talk to them. So far as I know, neither of them ever knew anything about any of it. They’re both gone now, so I can finally tell that story.
