Years back my dad bought a 1979 Yamaha G1A. Two stroke. He used it at the drag strip to get back and forth on. Honestly? It was junk, but youda thought he was on could nine with it.

Funny thing about it, the transmission doesn't have a reverse but the car does go in reverse. You have to turn the key off, let the engine stop, then turn the key backwards. Then push the pedal, and the engine runs backwards for reverse. Interesting setup.

Governor was set to 2300 RPM on those. You could disable it and the cart would run mid 20mph range. Dad used to run it on golf cart race days when the track was wet or whatever. It was always a winner (gov disabled, crossed finish line at 27 mph). Well, he had some issues with the muffler (plugged up) and there's no fixing that short of cutting it all open and burning all the oil out. Stupid design but whatever. I found a place that sold a new one for like $125 at the time so I bought it without knowing anything about it. Shows up and it's a "racing" muffler. What? A golf cart racing muffler? Started researching....oh boy...you can get parts for them. So, while it was at the house I bought and installed the Yamaha Enticer (snowmobile) top end. 2 stroke, so it's simple. Did the pipe and top end and was seeing 37 to 40 mph depending on how big your sack was. Golf carts aren't made to go fast. Believe me! Then I found a gear kit for the transmission. I have no idea how fast it goes. It doesn't accelerate all that fast but it will fly on the top end, so much that it's uncontrollable with the typical "golf cart" front suspension and steering (which sucks). Dad passed and a lot of his toys were forgotten about or sold. I was asking my brother about it the other day and he said he just gave it to some guy at the track. I kinda wanted it, but it wasn't anything I just had to have.

So yes, some people play with golf carts. I'm a gearhead so if it's got a motor, wheels, and gears, I'm down. I've done turbocharged 3 wheelers, turbocharged lawn mowers (my old G1900 was turbocharged, although the power increase was negligible, if any at all), motor swaps on go-karts, etc. I've grown up quite a bit now and have little desire to play with that kind of stuff anymore but I will occasionally. I bought a bass boat the other day, also a 2 stroke, and it's begging to be sent off to hydrotec. I'm trying to tell myself NOT to do it, though.
