D1105 timing issue.

I rebuilt a 2007 toro groundsmaster 328 d mower with a d1105 in it because it had a bad rod so everything was done new rods and complete rebuild. Set timing off the manual and it's sucking air in the exhaust and blowing out the intake. Any help would be great before I pull it all apart again.

Sounds as if you are 180 degrees out of mechanical timing

Any chance that you dropped/lost/knocked out a key from either shaft when reassembling, and now the gear has spun on the shaft?

The gears were not pulled other than the crank. I went off the pictures in the rebuild manual that shows timing marks and it lined up perfectly. All the valves are moving freely the only timing mark that didn't show up exactly like the manual was the dot on the crank itself.

Are you sure all the valves are closing?

Pretty sure without taking the head off I can see the intake valves all moving properly.

Just take the valve cover off and you can see what the valves are doing.

It sounds like you may need to go back and have a closer look at the timing marks on the crank.

If the valves aren't riding, one other thought, perhaps there was enough relief on the crank gear that allowed you to install it backwards so the timing mark is on the back side of the gear?

When setting the timing gears should the crank be at tdc?i just looked at the crank and the dot on the crank of aligned with the idler gear would be at the bottom of its stroke.

The TDC does not matter when you set the timing, because the crank must be in the proper position for all the marks to line up, irregardless to when anything else is in the motor.

Also #1 mistake that some make is to only line up one set of marks and call it good, you must align all three point at the same time.
Make sure tooth mark lines up with notch (between the teeth) mark.

After you align the once any rotation of the motor will make it "look" like it's out of time because the marks only realign after 28 revolutions (or some other odd number) so align it and button it up.

Looking at the crank I have just a single dot do I line that one up with the 2 dots on the idler gear?

Got it going the crank dot that I lined up with with first time was wrong I trying it by flipping the crank 180 and it fired right up. Thanks for the help

Hey there I know this is an old post but I have exactly this issue -how do you mean you flipped the crank by 180?

That person has not posted since 2017 so doubtful they will reply.

But from what I understand the timing is set by the gears on the front of the engine (under a cover). There are a number of dots on each gear. The center gear has to be put on last and has the same sets of number dots spaced out on it. Align dots properly and timing is set

But once the engine has rotated the dots only align again every ### number of rotations.

I assume the person posting here put the dot on the crankshaft 180 degrees out of position to where it should have been and that resolved the issue somehow.

Look CLOSELY at the diagram above.. Two SINGLE dots align, and two DOUBLE dots align AND two TRIPLE dots align. ALL at the same time..
