I did an engine swap this past spring on my B2100.

The replacement engine has become harder and harder for the starter to engage. So before my vacation I pulled the starter and went through it and it appears to be in good condition. I did look inside the bell housing at the flywheel & ring gear. To my surprise the gear is almost non existant. The teeth are virtually chewed completely off (85% gone)

I have the original flywheel and ring gear from the engine that was removed to swap over.

But before I do that I am curious, was there multiple ring gears available to the 1005 and is that maybe the reason for the gear to be all chewed up? Or is there something more I need to be looking at before I pull the engine for a 2nd time?

I know i should have counted the teeth before I bolted the engine in, but I was in a hurry and maybe even lazy.

I will accept any advice offered. Thanks in advance.

There is actually a serial number break. I don’t know what the difference is, but it can be flipped and re-used if not completely destroyed (and if it’s the correct set up).

hmm, are ALL of the teeth virtually gone ?
If so,I suspect the starter was 'on' while the engine was running for a long time ??

I know 4 stroke gas engine always stop at 1 of 2 places,so only a few teeth can get chewed....

check # of teeth on both ring gear AND starter (should be listed...)

Also check the "throw" of the starter... Does the pinion fully engage the ring gear or is the ring gear too far away from the starter?

I have pulled the engine and changed the flywheel. I did a complete flywheel change as the used flywheel i installed had a good ring gear. Before I bolted the engine back into the tractor I installed (with temp bolts) a different starter to make sure I had good engagement and that the teeth of the starter had a good mesh with the flywheel.

I also counted the teeth on the damaged flywheel and replacement flywheel and they were the same 106 teeth. Both starters had the same # of teeth.

My best guess is the original starter was the culprit. Maybe its bendix was not fully engaging. I would have thought the starter gear would have been the sacrificial material as opposed to the ring gear itself.

i am attaching the gruesome photos for all to see and I welcome any observations others may have

Thanks
