Cultipacker options

I’m looking for opinions and experiences on what folks are using for cultipackers-
What’s the pros and cons of 3 point vs tow behind

how much does one need to weigh to be useful

what are some good commercially available options if I can’t find a used one at auction.

my primary use would be food plots and crp planting.

The answer is "it depends" a lot on the tractor you are planning on using and soil you are packing.

I've seen them on FB Marketplace frequently at least lately. Might give that a try. Paying new price and seldom using an implement is expensive!!

crappy photo... I bought this off of Craig's List for $150 (actually gave him $200). Double roller, the seed box is rusted but I wasn't planning to use that. The old man selling it, put in most of the golf courses around North Carolina, (Pinehurst was mentioned). I use it to firm up the seed bed before seeding, then again afterwards to press seed into the dirt...

Heading up to the farm this wk/ed - that's on the "todo" list!

Before the Chinese came, I saw one in the local scrapyard, had to be 25-30' wide(a LOT of rollers ).Back then I could get it for 5c/# though WHAT could I use for ? I did buy the 100+ year old potatoe picker.(perfect steel wheels !) Thought it'd be good to lift up garlic..........

For small jobs a 3-point version would be more convenient. Well drained light silt loam soils that don't have a terrible tendency to be cloddy will not take much to break up and provide a nice seed bed.
Tow behind models give you the option of pulling it directly behind the disk and doing both operations in one pass.
Double roller models tend to do a nice job on breaking up moderate clods in one pass.
A double roller model with a drop seed box in the middle like the one in the post above is perhaps the best tool ever developed for conventionally tilled seedings of grass and forage, giving almost perfect results more often than not.
Older models can be had pretty cheap at farm auctions (and junkyards). The roller axle mounting points tend to be worn badly since they operate in the dust and dirt and seldom got greased adequately. For a tool that will be used only rarely it can be bushed up with something like PVC (some originally used wood) and it will still outlast the next owner.

Look for an older Brillion seeder. Best grass/legume type seed seeder built. Double roll culti packer with 2 seed boxes to drop 2 different types of seed. They come in tow behind and three point hitch. They are heavy so for your size tractor a tow behind would be better.
