So, I've owned my L2900 since almost new and taken pretty good care of. 850 hr use trouble free other than minor stuff. Out of the blue today it started blowing steam in the exhaust. Never had any overheating issues at all, coolant is still full and clean. Needs an oil change but level is good nothing abnormal about it. I've used it for small acreage stuff including mowing, grading, clearing brush, etc. Any ideas what or why?

Yep head gasket would be #1 choice.
Get it fixed quick, I wouldn't run it anymore because your risking doing serious damage.

What was the situation when you noticed this steam? Was the engine warm or cold?

You are going to want to do some testing yourself to help narrow it down. You might want to get a coolant pressure test kit for instance. Most auto parts stores have them for rent.

Pump up the radiator and watch to see if it holds. If not, you have to find out where it's going. Pull the glow plugs to avoid a hydrolock situation
