Leafy England....
Hi all
I have just embarked on another self build/restoration project for use with my b6000, its a hydraulic tip trailer, nothing fancy but it will do the job intended( i hope).
Anway, back to the reason for this post, i'm converting an old flatbed with dropsides trailer to a hyd tipping item. I've planned it all out to the point of what hydraulics to use.
I have aquired a nice quality spool valve (double acting with a PB outlet allready setup) for the hyd power source. Trailer size is approx 5.5 feet long x 3.5 feet wide and has a load capacity of 1680lbs.
I am pretty well ok with everything on the build except i cant get my head round what size ram to use for the hydraulic lift, i'm thinking a double acting unit to make an easy connection to my spool etc, but what sort of size ram should i use, eg, cylinder size rod dia etc. I supose it will need to be matched to the hydraulic output of the B6000 hyd pump.
I think a ram with a total extended lenght of approx 800mm is about right but thats all i've worked out .

any help would be great guys as its doing my head in now, hydraulics are not my No1 subject at present.
thanks
rob

Is the purpose of the trailer to make it tilt for loading the tractor on or do you mean a dump trailer like a dump truck for unloading material like mulch or soil?

thanks for the reply, thats a good point which i should have made clearer to be honest.
the suggestion of a tilt system for loading never even entered my mind, and sounds great but i was looking at the trailer for the use of dumping material etc so any input would be great.
thanks

Many conventional dump trailers use a single acting (gravity down) multi stage(telescoping) type cylinder ram, This is done when space puts restrictions on the length of ram space available,Some mount the cylinder so that it pushes straight up which means that you need a well big enough to accomodate the cylinder when fully closed, Other methods like used in some dump trucks use a scissor setup where the cylinder lays horizontally and works very similar to a scissors jack.

Scroll down to numbers 10HD and 12HD and 14HD on the page for the below link and you can get an idea on how they work.

thanks for the link, that is great.
I do like the scissor lift method as it keep the ram lenght down, but still need to work out ram cylinder sizes (rod dia, cylinder dia etc, ) so any more info would be great also.

Rob,perhaps the way to start would be to work out the maximun load you need the ram to lift with a bit to spare.
Maths and the like is not one of my strong points so I can only help with a few idea's.
I have looked at a our tipping machinery and it seems as if they have the ram mounted at around 10 to 15 degrees above the horizontal .
The ram frame mounting point is nearest the hitch and the rod mounting on the tipping bed slightly over half the length from the bed fulcrums .
Now if your clever you should be able to work out how much force is required to lift your maximum weight with a lever arm of just over half the bed length .
You should be able to work out the ram length of travel by graphing it out and measuring how far the ram contact point has travelled from rest to full tip position.
Good luck
Dave
