I see that Chevrolet is putting a diesel in there Cruz, wonder who makes it? I had one of the few Ford Ranger diesels that were made back in the 80's ,talk about underpowered!

"To pull the Cruze diesel out of its hat, Chevrolet first pulled a 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder out of Opel’s Astra and Insignia and dropped it into the U.S.-market Cruze"- according to Car And Driver.
That was a Mazda diesel that they put on the Ranger for a year or two, and everything of that era was underpowered, compared to now.
You can still get the Ranger in a diesel overseas, and it is still from Mazda.
My oldest daughter as a diesel Jetta/5 speed manual, and it pulls great. You can drive it like you stole it and still get 48 mpg.

Yep Mr. Hodge you are correct on the Mazda, The mazda pu's and rangers of that era shared a lot of parts.
If I remember correctly I got just under 30 mpg.
I put on a cap that stuck up 4 inches over the cab and lost 3mpg and 5 mph. lol

I can't speak for older diesel pickups, but my 2000 powerstroke get 17-20 carrying about 500 pounds around in conbination city and highway driving. If memory serves me right I think mazda and ford still share a lot of parts. at least up through the explorer / navajo era.

At one time years ago Ford was looking to put a diesel in the F-150 but could not find anybody to build a small enough highway diesel. They looked at Navstar, Cummins and Caterpillar since those diesels are used in the large Ford trucks.

I hear that Dodge is going to offer a diesel in their 1500. It is expected mid 2014. Can't say that adding a diesel to a Dodge 1500 would be enough of a carrot to make me buy one.
I feel the need the to explain part of my anti-Dodge mind set. I live in Kellogg, Idaho the location of the largest Dodge dealer in the world. They have loaded up every avaiable sqft of pavement of my town (population 2,500) with their vehicals.

Actually they only own 3% of Mazda down from the 11% they once had

2013 Update: GM hasn't followed through on its promise of a diesel engine... yet.
On June 15, 2007, General Motors announced that it will produce a new 4.5-liter Duramax tubodiesel engine for its light duty trucks built after 2009. That list includes the Chevy Silverado, the GMC Sierra, and the HUMMER H2.
The new diesel engine is compact, and will fit in the same space used for today's small-block V-8 gas engine. We won't have exact specs for awhile, but GM projects a rating of at least 310 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque for the engine.
GM says owners will see a 25-percent increase in gas mileage, and that the new turbodiesel will produce about 13-percent less carbon dioxide and 90-percent fewer NOx emissions than comparable gasoline engines.
The opportunity to own a truck equipped with a turbodiesel engine is good news for those of us looking for the increased towing capability those engines offer -- but don't want or need a heavy duty truck.
Charlie Freese, Executive Director of GM Powertrain Diesel Engineering, made this statement to the press:
"This new V-8 is not only a clean diesel meeting the toughest emissions requirements in North America, it also delivers an effortless performance feel because of its high torque across the speed range. It is also significantly quieter than other diesels on the road today, with noise and vibration performance approaching gasoline V-8 levels."
GM's Duramax turbodiesel line was introduced in 2001, and has boosted sales of the company's medium and heavy duty pickup trucks. It's also used to power GM's large vans and commercial vehicles.
General Motors isn't the only automaker developing a clean diesel for its light duty trucks. Nissan will put a diesel in its Titan truck and Ford plans to add diesel as an option to its half-ton pickup trucks.

I did read that Ford is looking to put a small diesel in the F150, and that Nissan will be putting a 4 cylinder Cummins in the Titan. Finally, the market is going to have some more diesels. I am all for diesel- it is clean, reliable power from a source that, unlike gasoline, can be manufactured.
Its amazing that GM just didn't use there partnership with Isuzu and put the Isuzu 4 or 6 in a pickup, that's damn near a bulletproof powerplant.
Bulletproof yes, EPA compliant, no. Toyota and Nissan both build powerful, ultra durable diesels, but they aren't compliant. I have a friend with a 2012 Toyota Landcruiser wagon/6 cylinder inline diesel down in Haiti. That thing is a tank, and would outlast anything sold here in the states. It has almost no emissions gadgets on it.

eric, back in the "80's , I did research and developement for Hertz on their ford powered vans . They had put a 4 cylinder diesel in a test vehicle and I had to make all the changes to the trans to make it driveable. The last time I talked to the test driver ( engineer) , he had driven th vehicle over 250 thousand miles. Sombody must have stopped the program. I never heard anything after that.
Around the same time Chevy acutally had a small diesel in their 1500's. I guess when too much of a good thing is in production they shut it down.
Just been in the UK and hired a 2 liter turbo diesel GM Sedan. 47 mpg and 0-60 in 7 seconds. Most SUVs there have 3 liter turbo diesels. Even the big luxury sedans have Diesel engines there. Jeez, they will be putting them in tractors next!
the cruze diesel is turbocharged lots of power the new nissan titan diesel will be a cummins V8 diesel 5 liter
My 2006 Cunnins 5.9 turbo gets 20-22 mpg unloaded and 14-16 mpg with 10,000 lb 5th wheel in tow.
Dodge would really have something if they put an Allison in the power train.
Watch out for the late model diesels with the urea systems - going to be expensive to own initially.
Gasoline isn't as readily available as diesel in many non-US territories such as parts of South America, Africa, parts of Europe, etc. Diesel is preferred and many vehicles are manufactured or modified accordingly.

I've heard that GM now owns Allison, not 100% sure on that one. If thats true then it would be a power house to have a Cummins bolted to a small Eaton/Fuller tranny. Like a 6 or 7 speed manual. Talk about indestructible.
Die hard Dodge guys have a hard time understanding that Cummins can be put in anything. Alot of Ford medium dutys used Cummins.
Oh heres a thought. Ford F550 with a Detroit diesel and Eaton/Fuller 7 speed.
