Changed the Tranny/Hydraulic Fluid, now it's not operating correctly

I have a L2500DT. I had a leak on the below rubber hose, so drained all the tranny/hydraulic fluid, figuring I may as well just do full change.

The specs say it requires 7.4 gallons. I filled it it with 7 gallons, checked the window, 7.4 gallons, checked the window, 7.6 gallons and checked the window. I let the motor run for a few minutes too, then slowly drove it around. It almost died when I did this, and the rear lift just jumps up and down. Listening where the rear fill is, it sounds like the pump is getting some air in it.


So I am at a loss on what is going on. The window doesn't show any fluid and it isn't working correctly. Is there another capacity that I am not taking into account that would require another 4, 5, or 6 gallons? I dont want to overfill it.

I am going to say that it may be overfilled . . . the capacity the manual states is most likely dry capacity . . . there is going to be some left in there when you drain the system . . . when I did a hydraulic oil and filter change on my L3800 HST it took about a gallon less than what the manual stated to fill it to the 1/2 point on the site glass.

Try draining some off and keep an eye on the site glass . .

I am not an expert but that was my experience . . someone smarter and better looking (probably better paid also) will be along shortly . .

Thanks for this. I can try draining some tomorrow. I should have said, I filled 90% of it thru the rear cap, 10% thru the cap next to the shifter. I asked the parts guy if it matters, he said no. Not sure if it does or not, I would think not though.

No it doesn't matter where you fill it the fluid flows threw it all.

I'll agree with, Who is John Galt, most likely over filled, that would be why the three point is funky.

Drain and watch the window.

I drained some out today- sure enough it was overfilled. I tried a few times going back and forth with getting it just level. I let the engine warm and drove it around the house each time and then checked the level to get it right. I left it and came back this evening to check the level- I can't see it now. So at what point do you check the level? After it's warm or when it's settled? I would think the latter, just like a car.

Also, the 3 point still jumps up and down, although it seems to do if faster than before. It worked fine before I did this.

One more tidbit of info, in the pic above with the hose, I had to remove the two bolts on the meta tube that goes to the hydraulic pump?(Not sure what that is). I had to do this to get the rubber hose on. Do these need to be bled like the engine? I suspect that may have gotten some air in there.

Try replacing the hose clamps on the rubber hose with a set of the screw type hose clamps. The style that tighten with a nut driver or screw driver. You may be pulling a little air into the hydraulic pump. Which can cause your hydraulics to work erratically

hmmm..... John Galt is a fellow I thought lived in Canada...... he is an avid WVO fuel user in his various diesel rigs. Does a good bit of Blending of WVO fuels but preheats is engines all the time prior to starting.

You have air in the system. Jack the front wheels off the ground and turn the wheels stop to stop. The will usually bleed out the air. The steering circuit has priority and will purge the air.

When you did a fluid change did you do a filter change?
Did you use a Kubota filter?
What fluid did you fill it with?

No opening the line will not bled air, hydraulic systems bleed themselves.

Follow kuboman's suggestion as it will flush air out of the system.

Book is from the mid to late 1950s

Spelling in the book is GALT, not Gault

For the window level, it is level when it runs/idles and no hydraulics are used. When it's off, it is low. What is the proper level to use?

I check mine cold and parked and fluid in the middle of the window.

Did you fix the leaky part in the suction line? If not it will continue the be a problem.

New member searching for a thread on changing hydro fluid and I find a John Galt reference. I'm still laughing, almost got that put on a personalized plated in my 20's.

Tractor is an L4740 HST at that expensive 400 hour mark.
