Can't get filter to break loose on L3240hst

I have changed the oil, oil filter, hydr. filter, and trying to change the tranny filter for my first 50 hr first maintenance schedule. I can't get the tranny filter to come loose. I have broke one filter wrench and bought a second one that is made like a water pump pliers and when i get down on it it slios. I am afraid I'll rupture the can and be up a creek without a paddle. Am looking for a chain type of filter tool that will not slip! Any help on where I might find such a critter? Help!!!

I did crush and collapse a oil filter I had on my Suburban one time. It crushed like a soda can. I had to take a pair of vise grips and take it off from the lip of the filter. You can get that oil filter off if you crush it/

I dont know how tight your space is, but I may have a trick that could work for you. If it is a normal filter you can hammer a philips head screwdriver through the center as a last resort and use it for leverage. It isnt pretty by any means but it normally works.

To say the least, that scewr driver trick is MESSY

I have broken many of the heavy duty cloth type strap wrenches with metal handles at work, the are light duty at best. My best success is always the chain type. This picture is the kind we use and it has never ever failed.

The problem you are having though is because the filter was overtightened on installation. When you put it back on it's bottom out and 3/4 turn (at most)if you can get that. Use your hand and never a tool for install.

Being the first 50 hour maintenance, there is probably paint around the base of the filter that is holding fast as well. The chain wrench should be strong enough to break the filter free. I would worry too much about damaging the old filter, you have a new one to replace it.

That chain wrench looks like what I need. I have not found one like that one though. Where might a fellow find a wrench like that one? I have plenty of room to work with, just can't get enough grip on it. Thanks all for the help. I also have a high number 51 Ford 8N that I like to use for cultivating the garden but I use the Kubota for road work and mowing.

Go and check Sears, they have them. They sell the exact same one the Snap-On dealer has. The only differance is you will only pay something like $30 for it where as Snap-On will take your first born.

These HST filters suck to remove and install, just because they are not like a normal filter at the base. They have an oring seat so you have to tighten them tighter than a regular oil filter. I have removed a hundred of them, with a standard style oil filter band type wrench. Just be sure to try to remove it with the wrench at the base. If that isnt enough, a large pair of slip joint pliers, like a channel lock or other large pliers should do the trick. Use a band typre wrench to reinstall and tighten. Be sure the oring doesnt fall off, or else it makes a huge mess, which I found out the hard way.

When I took the HST filter out of the box and removed the plastic end cover I noticed the "O" ring fell off and I thought a little dab of grease on the "O" ring will hold it in place when I put the new filter on. The manual said hand tighten 1/2 turn after it seats on the oil filter and Hydr. filter but the manual says a full turn with filter wrench on the HST filter. I'm sure it will make a huge mess if the "O" ring is not in place. Thanks for the tips on changing the filter.

Put a little axle grease on the Oring to hold it in place while I put the new filter on and started it up and no leaks. That is one quality tool from Sears. And heavy to! Another good choice is a pipe turner strap wrench. I used one my Cat filters. I had to get one that fit a 10 in pipe. It gets a good grip.
