BX25D Oil

I'm about to change the oil and filter for the 50 hour maintenance on my 2013 BX25D. The manual says specifically NOT to use CJ-4 oil. Napa only has the modern CJ-4 and older formulations. I phoned the Kubota dealer where I bought the tractor and they said the Kubota oil they would sell me for mine also is CJ-4. I told them what the manual said and they said the"damn" manual is never right.

What do you who own this model use?

Just do what I do. Put the Kubota oil in it. Kubota knows best and if there's an issue down the road let them take care of it. If the machine has remaining warranty then it's only wise to use the manufactures oil anyway.

CJ-4 is the latest SAE designation and is backward compatable. The previous grade was CI-4. I did notice when buying oil from my dealer it was CI-4. Could it be that your dealer does not know what he has? And you are correct about lack of availability of the CI-4 oil. It is very difficult to find. Ed B

Your quoted page shows I must use CJ-4....and my manual says, and I quote.....

* The CJ-4 engine oil is intended for DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) type engines, and cannot be used on this tractor.

How strange that the page you quoted says it must be used and my manual says not to use it.

I'm not trying to argue with you guys and your help .... I'm attempting to understand Kubota's intention. My manual is dated 2012, no month, and the quoted page says it's information supercedes all previous publications as of May 2012.

Oh for the simpler days of just asking for 30 weight.

I've spent lotsa time on the phone with my local dealer and then a regional office, who put me onto someone else....you know how it goes with large corporations. I finally spoke to someone who apparently knew.

He said they had a conference about what the manual said and what it should have said.

USE THE CJ-4. He said the manual that came with the tractor is wrong.

I am staying with the Kubota oil while under warranty. After that ,,, Shell Rotella . I don't know of a better oil for diesels .

You used some acronyms I didn't recognize. I've used Rotella since new on my BX2360. In checking, found this on container. I'm guessing CI-4 Plus is fine? As someone else said, I've always regarded Shell Rotella as one of the better diesel oils, and will be going to Rotella Synthetic this fall (at 100 hours or so).

On this note, I think this is a product of our digital society. My 3 kids sometimes think they're in DEEP SHYTE, when a text message from me is just sarcasm.

It is SO difficult to determine intent/tone/emotion from a short typed thought.

I didn't take your message as being a smart-ass at all, but for others, maybe it could be misconstrued.

From what I've seen on this Forum, Wildfire is a great guy, who is always willing to help.

He is also THE most talented Fabricator of BX25 modifications that you will run across. You should look up some of his work.

Take care all, and I'll have to look in my manual for the CJ, CI, etc. specs....

Glad to find this thread. I too have a manual on my M5140 which says do not use CJ-4 oil. Manual is dated 2010, but my tractor is 2014 without DPF.

Here is a guess as to how the confusion arose between the two different directions: The cj-4 oil is required if you have dpf, as is the use of ultralow sulfur diesel. The bx25d doesn't have dpf, and so doesn't need cj-4 for that reason. However it sounds like the cj-4 doesn't work as well if high sulfur diesel is used, requiring a different change frequency. For a while high sulfur diesel was still available here for off road use, and may still be available in other countries. So since you live here and presumably use low sulfur fuel it should be fine to use cj-4, or probably several other types as well. This is only a guess as to their logic....

Excited to read this tihread as well. The manual for my SLV75 says the same thing...do not use CJ-4. I called my Kubota dealer and they said they use type CJ-4 in all the equipment they service including engines with DPF and EGR.
