BX23s ignition bent

This is probably the silliest thing I have ever had brick a piece of machinery, but the tiny metal cover in the ignition bent when I tried to start my tractor this morning. I can't get it out, cant get a key in to start it, and the part seems to be built into the dash cover, which seems to require pulling the steering wheel to remove or replace. So I'm sitting here with a foot of snow on the driveway and a tiny piece of metal keeping my tractor a quarter mile back in the woods. Has anyone had this happen before and have an idea on how to fix it?

Your going to have to replace the switch, the door simply failed.
Now to get it going Put a screwdriver in the slot and pry/ and rip the top cover off.
That will let you be able to insert the key and get it running.
You can also just use a grinder and grind the thin nickel metal face off the switch.

YIKES.... $111 Canucks to buy it !!! Just checked... for $10 there's a cover for it though......

If you have some dental picks ( Princess Auto..sells them.) , you can extracate (fancy word for remove...) the 'door flap' and springs. Even an O-ring removing tool should work. Trick is to move the metal with one tool, then snag it with a 2nd tool.

If it's like my BX25, you do not need to remove the steering wheel to replace it. I had to replace mine, and while I don't remember the specific steps, I am quite certain I did not remove the steering wheel. Actually, it was a pretty easy job, other than the price of the new switch.


If mine fails again, it's not getting an OEM switch! I'll find or make something else.

'simple' to replace.....
disconnect battery ground
remove connector from switch
unscrew panel nut
install new switch
screw panel nut
install connector
reattach battery ground
this is all based on there being enough room 'under the dash' of course
AND you've got 1/2 bx of bandaids real close.....

If you get the door out of there and the switch operates normally, I’d go with the cover, or anything else I could find to keep the weather out.

Thanks everyone. I wanted to see if there was a polite solution before I went in with more force. Ended up just popping the front off and pulling the metal bit and springs out. Works just fine now. For a tractor with 60 hours on it, I have to say I'm pretty concerned about all the little parts that break off or stop working. I love the little thing, but I'm not hopeful about longevity.

Neither his nor your is the cover on the ignition switch offered or able to be replaced separately from the switch, it's a press fit part.

Ah, I read the previous posts as if there was a add-on 'flip cover' (like used on many accessory power outlets) to keep debris out of the switch when not in use.

it's actually on the cdn parts finder page....

Looks like you remove the mtg nut,add the cover,put mtg nut back on.

hmm.. at just 60 hours, how old is it ? Might be under warranty ? If not ,talk nice to the dealer about the 'rubber cover' K287196262 . He'll probably give you one for free.

I've got 950+ hrs on my BX23S (5 years), though it stays in the garage I powerwash when needed (often...),only used WD40 a handful of times.

also..check the front axle oil level! Yellow plug on top left of axle. VERY common to be low......

My bet would be the lock is frozen and full of ice based on what I see in your photos.

Try a blow drier and some de-icer.

yeesh, I finally looked that the pictures...
sigh, yes, it should have been covered up
'water' doesn't generally do damage, until it FREEZES....
I suspect 'wet snow came down, layered up, then it got cold and froze .....bad news....
best chalked up to a 'learning experience'....

BTW , check the small starter solenoid wire. They can vibrate off then you get a 'no start' problem.

The PN# is K2871-96262
And it doesn't show as available in 3 of the major Kubota parts suppliers?
Maybe it's easier to get in Canada?

And yes that's a new one on me.

It's about six months old now. Still under warranty, but the local dealer refuses to do any kind of after sale care, so I'm on my own. Definitely going to get an ignition cover of some kind for it now, it's pretty exposed without the cover.

I would assume that the dealer is responsible for doing warrantee repair work.
