Hi , I just got my BX23S and I love it so far .

I have a question about the Backhoe , I noticed the boom drops/drifts down when I try to slowly lift it up . It will go slow up once the lever is pulled up far enough . Being new to running a backhoe I am trying to move the levers easy/slowly and when I try to move the boom up , its drops a little before it raises . And If I hold the lever in that spot it will continue to drop/drift down

Not sure if I have a machine problem it only has 8hrs on it .

Thanks for any help

What is the engine rpm? I would contact the dealer - immediately;):)

I noticed it when hooking it up last night and the rpm was about 2300 ish .
I am planning on running it higher tonight to test things out more . I ran out of time last night .
Odd thing is I have run it a little before and didn't notice it that or I am worse at running it that I thought .

Has anyone else had this before ?

I have a new 23S as well, 20 hours on the clock. My boom does not do this. I have noticed the boom left/right is slightly less smooth than the other functions, like it opens up the valve quicker. At mid rpm (as per the tach label) the other functions are very smooth without any drift or reverse movement.

I agree with 85hokie, you should call the dealer. In fact, I'm going to call mine to see if my issue is adjustable.

I don't want to assume that it does just because its is new.
Good idea, just in case.

My BX2360 must have "burped" within first hour of use.

Took probably 1.5-2 quarts to fill it back to full.

Stayed full after that - probably just some air bubbles.

When new, or after repair work there can be air in the hydraulic system. It should relieve itself of the air pretty quickly. Have you cycled all the backhoe functions enough to get rid of any air?

Just a though to rule out....

Good luck!

Checked the oil , Full .
And used it for about a hour tonight so yes cycled through all the functions of both backhoe and loader with no improvement . Going to send the dealer a video so he can see the problem .

Dealer agrees that the Backhoe shouldn't that they even tried to get the other BX23S's to do it and Nope .
So they are picking it up Monday to fix it .

Rowlem --

I am quite interested in the outcome of your backhoe quandary. I have had my BX23S for only about three weeks and have 8 hours on it having disconnected the backhoe once for the connection of a bush hog in order to do some field work and then having reconnected the backhoe and otherwise (the remaining 6-ish hours) having been experimentation and practice for some undergrowth clearance and trail maintenance that I want to do.

I have experienced lateral drift that I didn't expect when attempting to use the backhoe (particularly if there is a slight slant to the tractor; and even with the stabilizers down) along with decreased sense of force... compared to the front end loader. I haven't done anything that really requires significant effort but something seems to be lacking and the lateral drift is significant and seems to be more than what a fully functional hydraulic system should offer, particular on a relatively slight slant of the tractor.

Did you conquer the problem? What were the issues? How are things now? Any suggestions for me?

Rowlem,

This is not "as designed" behavior but not terribly strange. There are little valves in the hydraulic system called 'load check valves' and the one on your boom lift circuit is not working right.

As you slowly try to lift the boom, you open the hydraulic circuit between the boom cylinder and the pressure side of the hydraulic pump. There is some range of opening where the valve is not open enough to prevent the weight on the boom cylinder from pushing oil the "wrong way" back into the hydraulic circuit. The load check valve serves the purpose of preventing this "backflow" of hydraulic oil from the cylinder when that is not the desired effect.

With the load check valve leaking you will get that initial downward motion until you open the lift valve enough to overcome the pressure from the weight of the boom.

This *may* work itself out over hours of use, but if the machine is new and under warranty then I'd have the dealer fix it.

Someone that knows more about hydraulics will probably be along shortly to punch holes in what I said, but the fundamentals are here to help you understand what is going on and why it is happening.

Good luck with your BX!
Mike
