I am as new to deisel engines as they come, so I’m a little worried.
I’m in WNY, and we are still very much in the winter season. Went to snowblow the driveway the other morning, it was about 20F degrees. I hit the flow plug for about 10-15 seconds, tractor fired right up. While it did start fine, it immediately started to run away. I shut the key switch off. After 30 seconds it died out. Think black diesel smoke.
I gave it a min, started up and ran fine to clear my driveway.
I went out yesterday afternoon, about 16F outside, same routine. Again, run away. Left the key switch on, died after about 30 seconds. It doesn’t get so high revving as to think it will explode, but it is high. I prob don’t wanna know the answer, but I need help

Since you are new to diesels; To try and stop a run-a-way, choke off the air intake. Stuff an old shirt or rags into the air filter housing.
If it was a runaway it would not stop by turning off the key.

I believe these start with the pump at full throttle. They do funny stuff on a cold start.

No, they don't start with a full throttle. They're supposed to start with whatever the throttle is set at.
I will tell you since I have 3 Kubota's with mechanical injection that even at idle they rev up upon start then ramp down to where they are set.

I did read later on about stopping air flow. It seems like it ran until it ran out of fuel. It starts at where I have the throttle, typically.
This wasn’t revving up and settling, this just straight up ran. Oil level seems ok.

All mechanical injection Kubotas will start and run at the RPMs where the throttle is set. There should not be any rev up and settle to the throttle setting.

You may have bad injectors that are leaking or over fueling the engine. You can have them tested and repaired or just replace them. There are tests you could do to see the spray pattern. See post #3 in this thread

If you get new ones do NOT get them from eBay or Amazon vendors they could be poor quality. Try to get OEM parts or rebuilt from a reputable repair company.

I'm with @Russell King, sounds like you could have a injector issue.

Take a video of it doing it, post it on youtube, and give us a link to see it.

I have 3 of them and all seem to start wide open but instantly go to idle, not really revving the engine if that makes sense.

Just curious... what year is the BX2370 and how many hours are on it?

So, I have run the machine one or two times since I posted and it hasn’t done it. It was cold this week, so I had a heater under the tractor to help with start up.

Gut feeling is if it were a real problem, even if it went away, it will probably come back.

So........What is likely the actual problem? Some reasonable suggestions offered above.

Seems like if the fuel cutoff solenoid was working, then the injectors would not be the issue, since the fuel should be cut off when the key is turned off.

So it seems to point to some type of combustible fuel getting into the cylinders after the key is turned off.

Is the suggestion that if it were a bad injector, that fuel remaining in the line between the pump and the injector could be leaking into a cylinder AFTER the key is turned off?

Could there be another reason other than an uncontrolled fuel source finding its way into the cylinders?

No expert here by any means. Just curious what I am missing.

I just don’t see how that could be possible unless all three of them have a similar problem.

I have had all 3 since new.

They all bark hard & then settle down in maybe 2 seconds or so, & run at where the throttle is set(idle when I start them) The tachs never show the engine running wide open. It is like a bit of extra fuel for starting. It seems like the governor would open them until rpm comes up to set point.

Many older truck diesels started open as well.

I have had a couple tractors with rosa-master pumps and they seem to do the same?
