Hello everyone,

I have seen posts about this but never a full answer.

I need to replace the parking brake plate/friction disks. It wasn't a case of mowing with the brake locked on, but that either me or my Dad before he died was riding the brake unknowingly. We both wear size 17 shoes, which doesn't translate well to having the parking lever directly beside the hydro pedal. I think what happened was part of our shoe was riding the metal part of the brake pedal while we were going forward.

That shouldn't completely wear the brakes since they arent self adjusting, but this was also bought used... the adjustment was almost maxed. I adjusted it the rest of the way but it's not enough hold to trust it on a trailer.

I know its a bear of a job but I have been seeing wild ranges in estimation of hours to complete or how far the tractor has to be disassembled. Anywhere from 10-40 hours depending on the thread. Anywhere from being able to do it in the machine with some creativity to complete removal of the tranny from the tractor. The parts diagram makes it look like it's one of the eariler pieces on the rear right side transaxle internals, but they don't show it in the frame, just the exploded diagram as if the diff is sitting on a bench already.

Also any info on gaskets and misc extra parts would be appreciated. Obviously the friction disks would need replaced but I have no clue what all gaskets or other one time use parts may need replaced as well.

Oddly enough, after I noticed the failing brake, I changed the hyd fluid, expecting it to be black. Nothing in the screen and the fluid was as clear as what came out of the new jugs to refill. I would be very impressed if the screw on filter was able to capture debris to the level of removing the "dust" color from the fluid, but I am not argueing!

Any concrete info would be appreciated.

OPINION That one is a walk in the park
drain hydraulic fluid
Jack it up, support center of tractor
Remove right tire
Remove axle case and Wala parts are in your hand.
Remove snap ring replace brake parts and reassemble.
You use anaerobic sealer on the case no gasket.
Refill hydraulic fluid.
Adjust pedal travel.

If it was run real hard for real long you might want have to change 050 and 070 along with 060
Look for wear or heat damage.

Thabk you! I really like this answer, and hope it true! To pull the case off (C427xx in the diagram) it sounds like the whole tranny needs removed from the frame, or so I gather from other posts.

Can I get a confirmation before I let a shop start tearing at it and I end up with a $2k labor bill?

Yes, the trans/axle must be removed from the frame first.

I do not know where you got your repair times but a person could very easily replace the brakes in 10 hours. 40 hours is a week's work for some people.

Thank you, I figured it would have to come out. And I agree 40hrs is wild, just pointing out what I read elsewhere before making this post.

Do you have any input on gaskets/seals/etc that would also need replaced?
