bX2350-tiller operation

Buddy of mine has a 48 inch tiller.
Says his tractor has a hard time running his tiller.
Doesn't think the machine has enough jam.
What is he doing wrong?

2350 w a 48" tiller should not be a problem, is it clay? has it been tilled before or fresh ground? maybe till at 4" then do the 8"

Its fresh ground, use to be farmers field.

I run a 48" land pride tiller with my little bx1500 in all kinds of soil.
other than braking a share pin once in while the thing is a beast
there has to be something wrong with the tiller.

Its not the tiller, I'm sure of that.
I used his tiller with my L1801 this past Fall.

He's been running a 60 inch snow blower this Winter.
No problem.

If the ground has never been tilled or its been a lont time or if critters have been stomping on it for a long time,, it's going to be hard packed, also the kind of dirt is a factor as well also WHEN he is tryig to till,,, hot dry ground caked hard not a good time to till, clay, rocks tree roots, also if its not been tilled before the take it in layers, like 2 or 3 inches at a time,, I have seen folks just sump the tillers in and cant figure why they dont work like they think they should. Sharp tines help too and make sure they are in the right direction to CUT the dirt, if you turn them around they work well for turning up the soil for mixing in manure and stuff, AFTER the soil has been worked reallllly good. Hope some thing here helps

I get the feeling he was dropping his tiller too deep, tried digging too much and too soon.
I don't want to givee him too many ideas, he's going to sell me his tiller for a song if he can't remedy the problem.

I posted earlier on this thread saying I run a 48" tiller on my bx1500
Ive had it 5 yrs. and just realized well getting it ready for spring it's
a 42" tiller sure looks big behind that little tractor. But anyhow it
works great.

I always break new ground with my spring tooth harrow (all-purpose plow) before tilling.

I will be preparing a bunch of area for tree planting, need some tips and tricks.

Click on the link below. This is not my plow but if you scroll down the page the last 3 photos are of an all purpose plow. If there is a lot of thick grass on the new ground a disc harrow of some kind will actually work better. When there is a lot of grass it clogs up under my all purpose plow. That makes the job more aggravating. A disc would dice the ground up and make the job easier. I was told when I purchased my tiller to always plow new ground before tilling.

I have something similar, it's a cultivator.
I might be able to change the ends out for something with a bit more bite.
Will also need to add some weight.
I guess the important thing is cutting thru the layer of grass...

My sod was thick and tough, made tilling a pain. I removed it with the FEL and put it in the compost pile for a year. I tilled and then added the same amount of manure as I took out sod. Tilled better and made for a nice garden. A year later all that sod when back in as nice rich compost. Just a thought, and this was only 1/2 my garden spot so 20 x 50, anything bigger would have been too much to move with my little tractor.

I'm looking at a pretty big area, more than I want to tackle with my little machine.

I thought about using a box scraper to peel off the first 2 inches of sod/soil.
I'd imagine this would be faster then the bucket.
Maybe still too big a job for my L1801.

Anyone chime in on best way to prepare 20 x 180 yards of sod for tree planting?
