2003 BX23. The coupler between my rear and front wheel drive shaft get off yesterday. Any tricks to reinstalling a new one?

It’s part 160, the universal assy joint. It looks like it locks in with a pin spring. I ordered this from messick’s today. I was just wondering if there were some tips that might be useful. I’ll lube it with grease before I put it on.

I wouldn’t call this a tip, but something to think about. I believe I read that the spring pins have a proper orientation when you put them in. I believe the slot in the pin is supposed to point along the length of the shaft that U joint is mounted on. What I remember is that this allows the pin to flex a bit. If the slot is perpendicular to the direction of the shaft then flexing can cause breakage of the pin over time.

This seemed logical to me so that’s probably the reason I remember it. I had the U-joint on the shaft that drives my mid mounted mower deck fall off, due to a broken pin. When I installed the new new joint I put the pin in as described above. Whether it makes a difference or not I don’t know. I figured why not do it that way…

Side note: After I installed the new U joint I bought, I found the old one laying on top of the mower deck along with some grass clippings that were hiding it…:D

Exactly the kind of to tip I was looking for. Thanks much.
