I'm very new to tractors and I just purchased this bx2230. Runs great and just cut about 3 acres this evening....love the 60" cut!!!! I noticed something didn't notice before but very well may have already been there. I wqs heating a high pitch whine that was there constantly coming from what seemed like the transmission. It wqs while operating the hydrostatic, it's just always there, whether I'm in gear or just at low idle, it's a constant whine. Is this normal?

Yes, they whine, always. On mine (BX231) it gets audibly louder, by the way, when the ROPS is up; I'm far from being an audio engineer, but I imagine it has something to do with the sound waves propagating through the steel "hoop" it then forms and making the whole thing resonate??? Do we have any specialists on the forum?
I always wear ear protection though, so for me it's not really an issue.

Slow the speed down - cut in low for a few minutes, does the sound drop ?
On those HST tranny's the fluid is being pushed at a high PSI and basically squeals when it is moving through the small passages.
The sound is typically a result of demanding too much load/speed when cutting.
The sound CAN me amplified by the tuning of the ROPS too as Daylight mentioned. Some have drilled a small hole in the ROPS ( many will say a huge no-no) and sprayed foam in the cavity - thus stopping the tuning of the ROPS.
Here is something that may help better than anything - pull the drain plug, change the hydraulic filter and place in some S-UDT2 and see what the sound difference is then.

Ok and I did hear about the rops but Mt concern is that's it's just always there, same pitch, same noise. It doesn't matter if I'm just sitting or open throttle or cutting, its just there. Ok I'll try changing filter and fluid. I'm not sure because the previous owner had it for a couple years and put 2 hrs on it and he wasn't sure how it was serviced before that.
If I'm just sitting facing forward or cutting Its hard to hear but as soon as I turn ear facing the back it's very noticeable
