i have a bx2200. the hydrostat transmission is leaking udt fluid out of the top of the assembly. there is a small (looks factory) hole that the oil is coming through. could this just be the hydrostat transmission assembly needs to be replaced or is it something else.

That is moisture in the hydraulic fluid. Lots of it!
I am surprised it is working!:)

Drain all fluids......and replace all filters too!

Run it a bit and do it all over again.

Your machine is kept outside in the weather?

yes it is kept outside but i keep it covered. i noticed it leaking from the top of the hydrostat assembly and stopped using it. do you know why it would be leaking oil out right there? i dried the oil up and it doesnt seem to be cracked but there is a whole there but it looks like its supposed to be there. thanks for the responce

that small center hole is where the oil is coming from. Its a threaded hole. But nothing goes there. And in the bottom of the hole there is about an 1/8 perfect whole in the bottom of that hole on the side. Sorry hard to explain in words

When the oil is the color of Coffeemate, it's loaded with water. Probably overfilled but with water instead of oil.

So is that why it’s leaking? Because it leaks so bad right there in the picture that it doesn’t hold fluid at all. I’ve put the UTD fluid in and it all leaks right out

I might add that when the fluid is the color of coffeemate and you residing in Maryland, there is a real good chance the fluid froze in the transmission and screwed up something internally.

Jim -

First I'm concerned that it froze due to the water, possibly cracking something. HST is seldom rebuilt - too hairy to do; they're just replaced for 1,000's of dollars.. Don't know weather in Maryland well enough to know if a hard freeze is possible....

Before all is deemed lost - I would do what Hokie and Nickelplated said - drain and refill. Might take a couple of tries....but much less expensive than replacing the HST.

You can get a free WSM - Workshop Manual - here - I saw one listed:

http://www.kubotabooks.com/

Secondly - you can look up the Illustrated Parts Diagram for your machine here:

https://apps.kubotausa.com/illustrated-parts/

Agree to terms - put in BX200 - and get to HST Component Parts.

Good luck!

There's lots of guys much smarter than me willing to help along the way.

It isn't normal for oil to be coming out that port! As others have said, the colour of the oil indicates significant water. that said though I have seen them leak a little through there in a couple of cases. both times I just installed a plug into the threaded fitting and the problem was solved. That is certainly worth a try in you case as well. As others have also said you must flush that water out if there! It is quite possible that it froze and had sufficiently warped the housing so that the seal between the housing and the valve plate is compromised. The drilling you see in the bottom of the hole extends to the valve plate and should be blocked there. It will take a few oil changes to ensure the water is sufficiently cleaned out and must be watched carefully to ensure it doesn't build up again. You must also find how it got in there and fix that! My best guess is the transaxle vent or the filler cap. If there is oil coming from there with the engine not running the oil level is much to high.

thanks! this has been the most helpful. i appreciate everyones post. i have thought about plugging the hole too but first thing first is figure out why the water is there. thanks again.

Once you clean up everything....take a picture of the "hole" - as mentioned....
if this is a hole, is something missing? or is this a vent?
IF something is cracked....hopefully that too will be seen.

In the hydraulic system, pressure is built, and as the fluid gets hot it builds pressure on the return side and thus needs a vent. IF (and you do) have water in the system...if foams when pressurized and churned - and if cold enough will freeze and make a hellva mess.....

clean the outside first - really clean......then show us up close picture of the affected area;)

yea i cleaned it up and the hole looks like a factory hole. so like you said maybe a vent. no picture at the moment. im going to change the fluids like you said and go from there.

I would go buy some ....what the word.....
"cheap" UDT ...or something that you trust - but AS SOON as it gets in and mixed up .....its coming out as bad as the first batch ......

in your case - you gonna need "gallons" to get that inside clean.....

and when you do have it somewhat clean.....moved to something that is "good" and it will cost more too!

change the filters with each change - I cannot imagine what that first filter will be looking like.

Please do post pictures - I hope you get is up and moving and everything comes clean inside and OUT;)

The port isn't a vent. It is a oil filter adapter when this housing is used on a different application.
