The oil seal (not sure that's what it's called) on the left rear wheel of my bx22 (470 hours) pops out. Wasn't sure what what was happening at first, just notice oil on the wheel. But when I looked underneath oil was just pouring out. I can push the seal back in and the oil stops leaking, but it will pop back out in use in a fairly short period of time.

Can this be fixed or does it need to be replaced?

Definitely a new seal situation because that one is loose now and will never stay in.

The new one might not stay in either but hopefully it will fit tighter.

Just in case it is loose, when you install the new one, use some silicone sealant, the type used by car guys where oil is involved, not the bathroom stuff, and spread some on that inner rubber seal area that you see in your picture before you tap the seal back into place. Then leave it over night and finish the repair the next day. This way the new seal should be as solid as possible in the hub and ready for duty.

Just spreading sealant on the seal will mean less will get into your rear-end and that is a good thing. Some will ooze out as you tap the seal into place but enough will remain to help hold it in place.

Good Luck.

That's what I thought. Looks like it requires tearing down the transmission because you can just slide it off the shaft. A bit beyond me and looks like it will cost quite a bit in labor.

In any case I went ahead and tried reinstalling the existing seal with the silicone you suggested. I figured the worst case was being out a few dollars of hydraulic fuid and the cost of the silicone. So far it's been holding (about 10-15 hours).
