Well I finally found a HST (New) and got it in. About to start the project. Any words of wisdom as I embark on this journey to get it back moving? Other than more SUDT2 - any parts I should purchase ahead of the repair?

you might wanna look the fich up, and see if it calls for any o-rings and gaskets ?. if your tractor is anything like my b2100 ?, you will have to split the tractor in order to get to it ?. watch for any odd placed hydraulic lines that have o-rings ?, remember where they fit. a tube of yamabond or hondabond might come in handy to seal up where metal mates together, and it does not call for a gasket ?.

Take a lot of digital pictures before you start removing another part, try to organize everything as you remove it, keep the hardware in bags with labels telling you what part it was for, don’t rely on your memory.

Use a torque wrench when required

Buy or acquire a Work Shop Manual and read it before starting the job

See if there is someone at the Kubota dealership that moonlights in fixing tractors that has the experience to work alongside you. Just like a surgeon has a couple of other surgeons working alongside him as he performs difficult surgeries.
I have watched a master mechanic rebuild transmissions, and his level of knowledge along with specialty tools that he has manufactured himself has made him a reputation that others are envious of. This is the type of person that you need to locate, except that this person will be a Kubota technician.

The hydrostat assembly in the BX is bolted to the front of the transaxle. The screen filter for the fluid is in the bottom of the transaxle reservoir. Unless the pieces you found in the screen are small, I would more suspect transaxle issues than hydrostat.

there are only 2 hydraulic return lines from the hst to the transaxle. One returns through the filter (and possibly the filter bypass). The other returns to the sump. While it’s possible small pieces of metal may travel through the lines, they would have to be very small. What size are the pieces?

Maybe the differential lock was abused and there are parts floating around in the transaxle case that keep working their way around and getting caught in stuff. Maybe they finally wedged their way into something and jammed.

There are no hydraulic lines on the HST, the fluid travels internally between it & the transaxle. The hydraulic oil is sucked into the hydraulic pump, pressurized, and sent to the priority valve where the steering gets priority. The steering return oil is returned to the transaxle through a hose, where it then is sent through the filter and some of the oil flow becomes the charge pressure for the HST. All fluid to and from the HST is done through ports in the transaxle front cover.

Correction. Oil is delivered TO the HST AFTER the oil filter through an INTERNAL port/tube/line (whatever you want to call it).

How does it return to the resivoir? Two options from the WSM.

Will either path be large enough to pass metal fragments?


Watching to see the HST replacement outcome.

Thank you all for your input. After many nights and a few busted knuckles, the HST has been replaced. I’m kinda dumb and did it so I believe it to be user level maintenance. Having better tools would have made the job easier!
I didn’t do the traditional ‘break’ of the machine. Instead I took off everything above the HST and the single cross member in front of it. Had to finesse it out and the other back in but seemed to be easier than the splitting of the machine.
the power has been restored and the only drawback is the machine wants to move in the last direction it was going when the pedal is returned to neutral. A small tap in the opposite direction allows it to remain stationary at idle. Thanks again for the safe advice and links.My wife says you guys rock - and she is happy she does not have to shovel the driveway this year!

I think that is precisely what I posted in post #28

How does it return to the reservoir? Two options from the WSM.
Internal porting.

Will either path be large enough to pass metal fragments?
Fragments will pass from the hydrostat to the reservoir through the case drain port.
