My BX1850 was dying when reversing up hill and occassionally when the pto was engaged. I read that it may be a problems with the fuel filters. So today, i took the bull by the horns and changed both filters (first time ever such a major repair job on my own) and, although the engine sounds lovely, it dies every time I put it into reverse or engage the pto. Is there something I did not do or did wrong to make things even worse?

My guess is it's a safety switch. That model tractor have the KRA system on it?

Reset what?

Dan
I meant the KRA system you mentioned. I checked the manual, although it has a safety switch on the seat that shuts the engine down if the operator gets up while the PTO is engaged and will not permit the engine to start while the PTO lever is down, there is no mention of KRA in the manual. Is there a way to override or reset the safety switch to see it that's the problem?

Then no KRA system on that tractor.

Safety switchs sound like a real possibility. You can test them with a meter and they can usually be jumpered out.

I think Dan is correct with the seat switch - - but just a guess on my part too.

The tractor "makes sure" there's someone in the seat via a simple compression switch in the seat. When a person sits in it, switch is compressed and all is good.

Applies to forward/reverse movement, as well as operation of the PTO in most instances.

Guessing when you're backing up a hill, you're taking weight off the switch, and it causes the engine to shut down. Sounds like the switch is doing what it's supposed to do. Not sure the issue with the PTO, but could be related to the same switch.

My first suggestion is getting an operator's manual for your tractor. While you have a BX1850, probably any BXxx50 series manual will be helpful. If they have a Workshop Manual (WSM), that would be helpful also.

Here's a couple places to start.

Also - - parts diagrams with part #'s can be found here:

Switches of the type can not be "reset," but can be tested for their operation with a multimeter.

There are other ways to go about testing.

That said, in your own words you just endeavored on your first and only maintenance project when you replaced fuel filters. That's routine maintenance.

I'm reluctant to instruct you how to bypass safety features for testing purposes. No offense intended, just don't want you to get hurt.

I do not think it is fuel - it is a safety switch somewhere. I am betting that it is your seat switch. Get a zip tie and force it down - ride around and see if it solves the problem.
