BX to LX — Different World

Just took delivery of my brand new LX2610 (ROPS) today. Ordered with the larger R14s and had the dealer install 3rd function and T&T kit. I’m coming off a BX2680, which was my introduction to tractors. Just put 2+ hours on it in the woods with the grapple doing some brush clean-up.

WOW.

I know I’m still a relative newbie — and I don’t regret learning on a BX — but the LX is a totally different machine. For the same 25HP, it is more capable in every single way. The BX works so much harder to do half the job. I knew the LX had more lift capacity and ground clearance — the 2 biggest reasons for the upgrade — but the same tasks that required high RPMs on the BX are a breeze in the 15-1600 range on the LX. I have yet to hear the HST whine the way my BX did on a slight incline. Same exact LP 54” grapple but I’m picking up 3x the load! I was worried I’d lose access to some of the tighter spots I could get the BX into, but not at all. Between the bigger wheels and tight turn radius, it gets in and out of all the same places.

If it’s not obvious, I’m literally shocked. Especially given that they’re both 25 HP tractors. The bigger displacement and hydraulic flow are game changers. Like I said, the BX for me was a necessary step. But there’s no substitute for experience. I’ll try to post some pics soon. Happy tractoring!

I'm glad you are enjoying the new tractor.

As many of us say HP isn't equal to HP. I'm personally glad I started with the L2501 HST. Even after 3 years. It's been all I've needed.

Congratulations on the new tractor! I had a BX for five years and upgraded to an MX6000 open station then to an MX6000 with cab so I get where you're coming from. Personally, I will never own anything smaller than an MX again.

HP is an interesting variable isn't it. My MX and M have very similar hp numbers but the M has a larger displacement engine 3.3L vs. 2.4L and it feels like a big upgrade over the MX in every way. The torque numbers for the M6060 and MX6000 are 169 lb-ft vs. 146.5 lb-ft respectively, but it feels like so much more tractor.

Not sure what you're doing with your BX!!

I would have accepted "tractor that you can sneak past your significant other by pretending it's a glorified lawn mower." But it's actually a real tractor - it has all the parts a larger tractor does. It's small. But the work it does is very very different than a lawn mower. I did an awful lot with mine. But I did eventually sell for a B2601, which is about the same length and width, but is quite a bit taller. The bigger wheels make a big difference to capability.

You were the one who got me thinking LX when I posted that I’d outgrown my BX! I was considering moving to a B at the time. I owe you one….

Like anything, you can outgrow it. Tractors fall into that. If you feel you need to step up, then go for it. That is all.

Funny thing is, some of them do. I see a few pop up on market place from time to time. Several older JD models smaller than a BX also run them. I even seen possibly the most useless thing ever the other day, a loader for a four wheeler. Can't imagine the suspension would like that very much at all. I bought my not so gently used toro zero turn from a guy who had an obsession with Cub Cadets, before they were just a rebrand. Had several little tractors with loaders on them and one with a tiny little 3pt like I've never seen before. That was quite interesting. Should have taken pics. The BX is a step above all that though, being much more capable of course.

I was considering one for quite a while before I bought my LX. Lift capacity was the main turning point for me. Did anyone else use engines as a metric for lift capacity selection? No? Just me? For those curious a BX will not lift a 426 hemi, but a lx will. However it will struggle with a fully dressed 360 with trans without ballast. You would need to jump all the way to an MX to yank a 24v out of a Ram though. Not that I would know. Also on an unrelated note a new engine hoist is no longer on my shopping list.
