This is the second time this happened. The rod comes clear out of the piston and jams against the clutch. The first time the three point was forced up when a tiller caught a bank going downhill. After a complete trans overhaul (because I went at it backwards) it has done it again without any attachment on it. How do I fix this?

I don’t know how to fix it, but obviously the rod shouldn’t come off of the piston. Is the a missing set screw in the piston holding the piston on the rod, something like that?

I checked my WSM, there isn’t anything that holds the rod to the piston. I can’t tell from the WSM what prevents what you have from happening. Maybe lift arms set rotated down to low so when something lifts up the lift arms to pulls the rod back too far?

I've never seen one do that.

Something has to be wrong, could be the clocking on the arms???

Or some wrong part in some wrong place???

Really at a loss, as the design should not allow the rod to come out of the piston and fall ever no matter what you do with the three point.

The first time it happened it broke out a cross panel part of the trans case you can see in pic #2. That time there was a lot of force involved. I wonder if that piece across the case is want keeps the rod from dropping past the socket of the piston. I can see a small wear mark on the rod where it would touch that broken out piece. The clocking of the arms could be the problem for the second time. Only reference I saw in the WSM is "align the marks". There are no marks.

Instead of saying it had no marks I should have said I did not look close enough. I am reassembling with correct clocking. Hope this works.

I would dry set it and try and get it to fall out.
I think your going to be disappointed.

I'm sorry I didn't notice that the web is broken out of the transmission (what we call the rear end), that is the part that keeps the rod from falling to far to fall out of the piston.

This all goes back to the original repair, the case should have been replaced back then.

If you had the broken web you could have had it welded back in place. :(

It works. I will keep a load on the 3 pt to force the rod to the piston. Haven't raised it all the way yet. Found the knob for the release speed was closed. Might have been part of the problem? If it fails because of that broken case web I am going the run a bolt through the case to support the rod. Too much time and money to replace case. Anyway, I got to fill in a hole and haul some firewood with it. Surprised at what it will do with just the rear wheels. Parts on order for the front propeller shaft.

Following up the 3 pt is functioning well. I keep a load on it because I'm sure if the upper links are lifted all the way by accident the rod will slip out of the piston. I am getting good use out of the unit and it gets into places my 35 HP won't go.
