I built a ballast barrel a few years ago. 55 gallon drum of concrete with 5 PVC pipes that run in to a PVC header at the bottom. That way anything that drops into the vertical pipes either runs out or can be pushed out and won't accumulate. Crate is bolted to the top for odds n ends.
