Hi everyone,

Working on my Kubota L225 brakes. I removed the cover, brake drum, and pads without a problem. The cover was attached with RTV red gasket and only a few 8mm bolts. The problem is that the cover should have been attached with about 10 bolts the rest have been broken off on the brake plate. How do I remove the brake plate so i can drill out the bolts and put in new ones. I took all 4 center bolts out of the plate but it will not move. It seems like the 8mm bolts attached to the brake plate are still attached to tractor but I have no way to unbolt them because the heads are gone. It is very difficult to drill a hole in the center of the old bolt with the plate on the tractor. What holds the plate in place?

Go to Kubota books dot com and find the WSM (Work Shop Manual) for the L225. It covers the brakes but not in great detail.

I think you are battling a lot of rust that has bonded it to the tractor.

I would be spraying it with your favorite high quality rust penetrant (PB Blaster, Knock’er Loose, Kroil…) then try to pry it off and hammer it with a mallet to move it back and forth. Spray, hammer, pry, hammer, spray, hammer…repeat.

Spray the inner diameter where it joins the axle case and into each bolt location.

You may want to find some type of wedge to drive behind it and then heat it?

But I would try the penetrating oil first.

There is a clip ring on the thing sticking out (#49 in diagram) and I don’t think they are holding it on but you could remove them just to be sure.

If you weld or have a trusted welder available you could try to weld a nut to the end of the broken bolts. Weld inside the nut to the bolt. Use a nut that is smaller so it doesn’t allow you to weld the nut to the backing plate. Try to unscrew the broken bolt. BUT if this doesn’t work you will have to grind off the nuts since the can be holding the backing plate on (like a bolt head).

Remove these snap rings (purple)
And clean these guide pins (blue)

Just had to hammer and pry on the end of the plate with a crow bar. It slowly came loose.

Also I tried everything on the bolts that you see are broken off. Heating with torch and trying a reverse bit to break them loose. Nothing worked so I drilled out the holes. and will use a lock washer and new bolts.

So I put everything back together after replacing the seals on both side. One side you have to apply the brakes about half before they start working the other side does not work at all. I have turned the adjustment as far as it will go but I still have no brakes on the one side. Am I doing something wrong or are they wore down. I had some braking in both wheels before taking it apart? I took some pictures

Did you follow the WSM measurements.
It looks to me the shoes are worn out.
And with that much wear on the shoes, I would bet the drums are worn too.

How do you even measure them? What do they start with in the first place?
Measure inside diameter of the drums with a caliper. A brake drum caliper would be best but a traditional one will work.

You dont need to know the drum diameter when new. NIW gave you the wear limit from the WSM = 147mm (5.787") for the L225. if the diameter is over that limit replace the drum. Also noted in the WSM is the upper and lower shoes are not interchangeable. Do you have them in the correct position?

drum is 5.67". How do you tell the upper and lower shoe apart? They both look exactly the same to me.

I dont know the difference in the shoes - just repeating whats in the WSM. Do you have all 4 side by side for comparison? How much travel in the lever arm when assembled?

A good caliper is required.

On that model the upper and lower shoe are the same.
Just by the look of your pictures I would say the shoes are worn out.

Got the new brakes shoes but the brakes still did not work. After taking it apart again it appear that the linkage is not factory. So at one point someone replaced the linkage but made the rods to long. I cut about a 1/2 inch off of each rod and now the brakes work. How long should the connecting rods be on the linkage?

I never looked at the picture till now, yea that's a little messed up.

Why not just get a set of OEM rods and save all the abuse.

@007kubotaguy might be able to set you up.
