Best thing I could tell you is find an area that does not really matter if you tear it up. But go out and wreck that spot and play around with it and learn what the grading box does and how it works. Take a large area if you can and drop the teeth and tear the ground up then see if you can smooth it out and put it back the way it was. For me I learn better by doing then by seeing or reading and like eveything else pratice makes perfect.

If you do have a spot to just go out and play around in. Make sure you adjust the length of your toplink to see how that affects the cutting and smoothing actions of the blade. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Hi Jeff F,

I have mine set so the gap under the side plates is about equal from front to rear. With the gap under the side plates even the cutting edges are touching the ground with about the same amount of pressure as well. If you have a good heavy box this setup will work for just about everything you want to do. Having the cutting edges level will also allow you to push material backwards when needed but be aware that when you push in reverse the weight of the material against the box will try to naturally push the box down so you will need to be prepared to do some adjustments if you want to keep it level.

If you have a light weight box you will quickly find out that it is much harded to cut down dirt or even level a pile of gravel. I have owned both and a cheap light weight box is a waste of your $$$. Not knowing what you have I will give you the specs on mine so you can compair.

Like Eric and Doskiez said just go out and play around with it. The more you use it the better you will get. Look at it this way, it's only dirt and it can always be put back.

Welcome to OTT and I hope this will help you out.

I am also new to tractors. I bought a box blade last year to level the 650 foot driveway. I set it so that it was about level and did nothing when dragged, that is the front blade just cleared the surface. Then I shortened the top link until the front blade bit into the gravel surface and accumulated material in the box when moving down the driveway. I have not had to use the teeth to break up the surface as yet, but the blade does a great job on the gravel surface. One I get the center leveled, I lengthen the right side on the three point hitch to lower the box slightly, then go down the right side of the drive and back up the left to create a slight crown for drainage. I have had very good luck running the box blade.
I also picked up a landscape rake this year. I can drag that back and forth and dress up the drive, but it does not even out and fill puddle dips like the box blade can.

When spreading dirt or gravel when I get to the finish part I have found that if I get the box full of material, then one can use the weight of material to fill in with. Just raise your box to whatever height you want to leave. This wil finish up surface really nice

They are still confused about how to weld up a broken box. :D

The only thing they know about fixing a pot hole has to do with a trip to the local crack house to score a rock. :D I bet they are still wondering how big the party is that requires a truck load of rocks.

My advice, take your time and don't try to get it all accomplished in one pass.
