My L3010 blew the head gasket. I was concerned about cracked block and/or head. Block and head are at machine shop. Machine shop says head and block are good but need to be milled .0010 each to get the decks good and flat. He was concerned about whether or not it would tolerate the milling. Asked me to check and see if I could get a thicker head gasket. I did. Not available. Can I have the head and block milled and put it back together with a stock head gasket? Or am I looking at a new head? Can I have the deck on the block milled and put a new head on it and be ok? Not sure what my options are.

Usually you can get a shim to make the gasket thicker.

You should probably discuss that with the parts people at dealership or possibly Messicks and see what they can find for your tractor.

Did you mean .010, 10 thousandths?
Seems like not much.

Best get the measurements right before going further.

The head gasket will be fine if you only taking .002 in total.

If you're taking .02 in total then you might have issues:

I agree. The manual allows almost 0.002" in 4" on the head and the block, so taking 0.001" off doesn't seem like it'd accomplish anything but cleaning the surface.

Thanks for catching that. Yes, I meant .010. Talked to machine shop and asked them to take as little as possible and see where we end up. They said that they could give me an accurate measurement of how much they take off and knew a guy that might be able to make me a shim. My other idea was to do what is needed with the block and just put a new head on it. Anything to keep from having to buy a new engine!
