Can you tell by the amount of blow by given off how much the tractor has been used? I only see a puff during start up, one second worth, and when mowing the hill at a slow rpm, also one puff. The tractor other then that runs clean.

Thanks for your insight

I’ve never been mowing with the oil cap removed to witness blow by. Do you mean black smoke from exhaust?

Blowby and exhaust smoke are 2 different things. A little black puff at startup and a little under load are normal. The crankcase produces pressure which is normal and it vents out the vent on the valve cover which in most cases has a tube people call the blowby tube. Blowby is when the rings are not sealing as good as they did new and you start seeing variations of minor smoke all the way to lots of smoke and oil coming out of the tube. I have tractors with 1000 hrs that has some descent blowby and some with 2000 hrs with no blowby. It's all about how it's treated and maintained. Hour meter really isn't much of an indicator of anything other than a good selling feature if low

My tractor runs clean, except for the every start up puff and occasional puff under load. I have seen around the various farms near by tractors always puffing smoke with or without a load. That is why I posted this question.

puffing smoke could be a badly tuned engine ( ie.. running rich ), unburned fuel which is not the same as 'blowby'.
