Blew front PTO seal and PTO extension came flying off BX2751 quick connect

So I was using my BX2750D with the 2751 quick connect when I heard an awful rattling noise coming from the front of the tractor. Next thing I know the PTO shaft came flying off the output shaft on the 2751 and was flying around under the tractor. I immediately turned the PTO off. I looked under the tractor to see fluid leaking out of where the PTO extension shaft connects. After looking further I saw it was the oil thats around the PTO Shaft leaking all over my driveway.

Is this seal easy to fix? I get the feeling now that my PTO extension shaft is bent that I will need to buy a new one. I just recently changed the output shaft from 14 7/8" to the 11" because I have a Bx1860. I made sure 5" was portruding out of the edge of the bearing. Why would this happen?!?! any help would be appreciated.

Ouch ...... sorry to hear that.....we were conversing on the proper mid-shaft for your tractor and I sent pictures of my operators manual.

I think you were able to look through the parts diagrams? If so, go have a look there. Might give a clue as to repair.

Also check workshop manual (WSM). If you don’t have a WSM, get one at Kubotabooks.com

Not sure an issue with a bent shaft, or the shock/rotation of the disconnected shaft caused the issue, but one step at a time.....

Provided the output shaft isn't bent or other damage you should be able to just tap a new seal in there. Looks like there wasn't enough spline engagement on the propeller shaft.

I saw this happen once before, with the shaft on a mid mount mower. The collar wasn't fully seated, and it came off the PTO shaft. After seeing that, I have resorted to spraying both the PTO shaft, and the drive shaft collar with Deep Creep penetrating oil, and push the collar all the way on, and then tug as hard as I can to make sure that it is fully seated and locked in place. It looks like you should be able to put another seal in there, and everything should work again the way that it is supposed to. I would check the part number of the shorter shaft and verify that it was correct for your application. It might have been too short, and not the correct shaft for your tractor. It is also possible that you receive the wrong part, but were charged for the correct part. I would discuss this with the Kubota dealers parts department, where it was purchased.

Yes you were very helpful with my last issues thanks again. So it turns out when I went to take the quick connect and the snowblower off so I could manually push my tractor into the garage I found out that the 11.5" output shaft(which was the correct length) actually vibrated loose somehow. I did crank on the set screws quite hard and maintained the 5" as per the diagram you had posted.

In talking with a millwright at work he told me next time it would be a good idea to use medium strength loctite on the set screw threads on the bearings.

So just to explain the havoc that this driveline shaft did while still connected to the Mid PTO. Dented oil pan in the front( almost broke through ), dented and broken hydraulic oil filter ( hopefully the housing is ok ), bent and dented driveline shaft, disloged the mid PTO seal and spilled about 3 gallons of hydraulic fluid on my driveway LOL. This is a hard lesson to learn for 4 little set screws that came loose somehow....

Priced all the parts I need and its $700 CDN. I guess some people have to learn the hard way eh?

If you were nearby, in all sincerity I would help you turn wrenches for the repairs....

I don't disagree with using Locktite on set screws, but keep in mind, that you need to heat them with a torch when you want to take them out. I have found that setting the set screws is better done with a 3/8" drive socket with the Allen wrench on the end of the socket, and a long ratchet handle. It is difficult to get them tight using just a small Allen wrench. I use Snap On sockets whenever possible, since they will twist before they will break. Even if you twist one or break it, it will be replaced for free by the Snap On truck. I learned the hard way that the Allen screw that the snow blower manufacturer uses in the gear box is set at the factory withLocktite. I had to use a 2' piece of pipe on my Allen wrench to break it loose. It dawned on my only after I got it loose that it was set with Locktite at the factory.
There are two types of set screws, one that has a blunt end and one that has serrations at the end. The one with the serrations will dig into the metal, and hold it tighter. I prefer these, but couldn't always find them until I purchased an assortment from a bolt vendor.
PS... if you have the Kubota insurance plan, I believe that they would pay for the repairs.

Hello,

Oddly enough this happened to me this week too. I have a bx24 and a bx5455hd snow blower. The quick connect I have is a bx2751. I seems what happened is the wedge screws to hold the snowblower on the quick connect got loose causing the snowblower to drop on the ground. This disconnected the shaft from the quick connect. The then longer drive shaft to the mid PTO started slapping on the ground underneath. I quickly disengaged the PTO. Then I got underneath and saw the tran fluid leading from the mid-pto shaft. What happened to me is the knuckle broke on the shaft and it caused the cap on the pto to come out leaking fluid. I was able to put the cap back in and tap with a hammer and fill back up with fluid I had on hand. No leaks so far but I just got it up to the top of my driveway. I have been watching it, continues to not leak.
Now I have to figure out how to replace/fix the shaft before we get dumped on with snow again. It broke at the u-joint. Anyone know of a good resource for these parts? It seems I lost a pin on the 2751 and the bolt that connects to the wedge connector as well. What is a good place to get parts for these types of things? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Contact your dealer, and see what they can do to getting you the missing parts quickly. I know that MB Tractor in NH has a good inventory of parts, and they have quite a few locations, so if one store doesn't have what you need, possibly another store does.
I have sent you a PM with information about the driveshaft repair.
