OK well I am building an apple press, but trying to make it look old like really old,,, and I want to make the bolt heads look like they were forged. I cut a couple pieces of OLD 1/8 inch plate I had laying around in to 3 inch wide straps and bent one so far,,, thats hard when all you have for hear is a bottle torch that dont work to good. Anyways I need some ideas on how to make the bolt heads look old,, Lets go guys I know you know this stuff

I don't know what kind of bolts you are using but put them in a vise and peen them. It would be easier if you had a way to heat it cherry red, but I have done them cold before, just a lot more pounding. Look on the net because I know you can buy them as my neighbor bought nails and bolts from some where on line

Start with a stove bolt. The head is already rounded, put it in a vise and "Distress" the head. It will look more like a rivet.

So my propane torch didnt heat so well. Had to clean the inlet inside the torch to make it chooch again. When i took it apart i found a valve, a check valve i guess.i figure its to keep propane from leaking out of torch head after disconnecting. Whatever the reason it affected performance. I have used mapp gas in place of propane, seems hotter.
If you can get them hot enough i would beat them square.and if you want to play blacksmith, get a bigger hammer and an anvil.

An option for heat is the torch some use for burning weeds. Will find a photo. IMG_2770.jpg here ya go.

You can get nice heat from charcoal. However, you need to blow air for hotter heat as you would have with a forge.. You can rig up a pipe of sorts on the end of funnel. Take a small portable fan and blow it into the funnel while directing the pipe to the fire.

Try looking up local blacksmiths, there are usually some around. I would think a state with as much history as PA would have plenty of blacksmiths.

Here's a custom truck grill made from .188 wall flat stock and stove bolts. You can use a grinder and BFH to distress the flat stock, and beat on the stove bolts too. You can use paint to really apply some patina.

Now cat ya got be nice to us old guys,, hell I dont even have a cell phone anymore, the one I had died and I never renewed a contract for a new one.
I did find the camera though, and also found that someone had lent it out to a grand kid, and we need not go into the shape it was in. Ya know AA battery's make a real mess in a camera. So that went into the trash!! I cleaned everything I could reach inside but Im thinking something else must have been eaten off in side. Oh well, shyt happens I guess.
