Scientists may has released a genetically modified mosquito that may be turning into "super mosquitoes." (Didn't we just try this with bees?)

By the way, a coffee buddy here in Phoenix caught West Nile virus last year and almost died from it. It's hell on old people and the cases of mosquito borne illnesses is rising in southern states.

A few years ago a guy (a machinist) that I worked with for 20 years decided to help out the widow lady down the street and clean up a partially filled, unused, green swimming pool. He said there was an initial huge swarm of mosquitos, and he soon contracted West Nile virus. He spent weeks in the hospital near death: kidney failure, collapsed lungs, various infections, & several strokes. He lived, but the strokes took their toll- his right arm is completely paralyzed and withered, and he had to take an early medical retirement. West Nile is nothing to fool with.

West Nile first got here in the late '90's. I was in charge of local Environmental Health. Saw a lot of dead crows at first.

Really freaked people out, because of the mosquito vector... almost unseen.

A rabid raccoon at least is obvious, and I went through that epizootic in the early '90's.

WNV is nasty for older folks. I don't believe we've had fatalities here, but there were several nearby at first, and continue sporadically.

WNV has not been a continued BIG threat like at first. It's still a concern always.

Lately Lyme's disease is more prevalent, and contracted locally. 30 years ago, if I dealt with someone with Lyme, I'd ask about their travel history. We didn't have Lyme-carrying deer ticks. Now it's here big-time.
