All my battery stuff is DeWalt. Have never replaced anything except batteries. IF you plan on sawing 3" diameter tree roots there is a 12" saw blade just for this. Will cut through roots fairly quickly BUT dirt will dull the blade quickly. But careful that the tree does not settle on the root you are cutting or else it is a b***h getting out. Cheap electric chainsaw is another option.

I was wondering how a chainsaw would work . I have a large stump I have been working on . I have it out , but too big to handle right now . So I want to cut the root ball up into three pieces and then haul away . Thinking maybe my old saw with an old bar and chain on it . I'll let everyone know how it worked and if the saw survived .

Make sure you have your chain file in your back pocket. The saw will work fine until you hit stones or a nail or some other object the gremlins stuck there just for that purpose ,,lol
I think anybody with a saw has tried that same thing, some times you get lucky other times not so much. My experience has always seemed to fall into the not so much range

I have the stump tipped up on its side right now . Started washing it out with the harden hose last night trying to wash out the dirt and stones
Going to take a while . I'm going to make a thread how I did this step by step with pics when I'm done . If not informative at least most will say how the heck did he do that with a BX25D , lol .

Been there, done that and have the $50 tee shirt  the $50 was for the new bar and chain. I have a 4ft round stump tight to the corner of the garage i gotta get after this weekend. Had it taken down 5 years ago. Hollowed it out with a chain saw, drill, and axe. Filled it with potting soil and turned it into a planter. It's finally rotted enough to where it's crumbling and falling apart. Still haven't decided what I'm gonna do yet. Probably clean it out. And take it out in pieces with the chain saw and sawzall as low as I can get it. Then will probably have to let it rot for a few more years.

My soil may be hard on saws, lots of sand and rocks. If I just contact the soil with a running chainsaw while cutting up a tree I stop and resharpen. Would not even consider using a chainsaw for roots. I noticed the sawzall blade dulled pretty quick, but it still cuts the roots almost as good as new. I did 5 stumps and 2 standing trees yesterday and did not change blades.
